Broken & Blessed Repentance is a heartfelt sorrow for sin, a renouncing of it, and a sincere commitment to forsake it and walk in obedience to Christ. Wayne Grudem

1.

Read Matthew 5:4. How is mourning different from just feeling bad? What other words would you use to describe a person who is mourning?

2.

In this beatitude Jesus urges us to take our sin and other people’s sin seriously—to grieve over it. Why do you think it’s important to do this if we want to follow Christ? What if we don’t?

3.

In 2 Corinthians 7:10 the Apostle Paul compares “godly sorrow” to “worldly sorrow” when it comes to our sin. What does “worldly sorrow” look like? What are worldly (but common) ways people deal with their sin?

4.

In what ways does God comfort us when we mourn over our sins and repent of them? These verses will help you answer. Share a time when God comforted you in this way. 

Proverbs 28:13—

Psalm 32—

Psalm 51:1-12—

James 4:7-10—

5.

Is it possible to grieve too much over our sin? How can we rest in Jesus cross-payment for us, yet take our sin seriously?

6.

On a scale of 1 to 5, how seriously do you take your sin and others’ sin? (1 = I really don’t think about it and 5 = It really hits me when I displease God.) What have you learned from this study about how God wants you to respond to sin?
