Merciful & Blessed We’re able to express mercy toward others only when we truly experience God’s mercy in our own lives. Mercy experienced leads to mercy expressed.
1.
Think of someone you encountered this week who has a need—a family member or a stranger. What was your mental evaluation of their situation and why they’re in it? How did you respond to them?
2.
Do you find it easier to show mercy to those in your family or people not as close to you? Why do you think that is?
3.
Is it possible to show mercy to someone and still hold them accountable for their actions or maintain careful boundaries with them? Give an example.
4.
How has God responded to your needs? What areas of selfishness, stubbornness, and sinfulness has He forgiven and helped you with? Why can’t we separate God’s mercy toward us from our mercy toward others?
5.
Would you say that you needed God’s mercy more when you first started following Christ, or do you need it more now? Explain.
6.
In Matthew 9:9-13 and 12:1-7, Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6 then says Go and learn what this means. What does it mean that “God desires mercy, not sacrifice”? Check out these verses and note how they speak to your life now.
