Covenant Groups Sermon Questions Based on Sermon from February 25 and March 11, 2018 Christian, the main character in The Pilgrim’s Progress, entered through the Wicket-Gate and was told to travel to the House of Interpreter where he would learn “excellent things” for his journey to the cross and beyond to the Celestial City (heaven). Questions based on the message from February 25 (“Excellent Things for the Journey Part 1”): 1. In the message, we identified the “house” as representing the Word of God and the “Interpreter” with the lighted candle pointing to the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit. What is the difference between illumination and revelation? Why must believers have the Word of God illuminated by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:9-14)? What is the most difficult passage in the Bible in your opinion? Discuss how the Holy Spirits illuminating work should affect how we go about reading our Bibles. 2. We followed Interpreter and Christian in to the first two rooms. The man in the portrait with a grave countenance in the first room represents a true and faithful minister of the Gospel and any spiritual guide. Why is this lesson about discerning a faithful spiritual guide fundamentally important to your Christian walk? What should be the goal of a spiritual leader of others (Colossians 1:28)? 3. The second room is about the only means to cleanse the human heart from the corruption of sin. What do Ezekiel 36:25-27 and Titus 3:5-7 teach as the only means for a sinner’s heart to be cleansed and what results form it? Questions based on the message from March 11: (“Excellent Things for the Journey Part 1”). 1. In our modern world materialistic world, the quest for instant gratification is often a problem. How can this affect our Christian walk? 2. In the third room we looked at Matthew 5:11-12 and 6:19-21, 24. How do these verses call Christians to live? Why is having patience so important to the Christian journey? 3. The Christian journey is one of suffering, persecution and difficulties. What are some of the ways we struggle on the journey? Why is Paul’s description of his thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7-10) so important to our journey? 4. What is the doctrine of perseverance of the Saints (Philippians 1:6)?
