2015-2016 WINTER PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Performance Training Our performance training approach emphasizes a series of age-appropriate exercises designed to maximize athletic potential and builds progressively throughout an athlete’s career into more detailed instruction as they reach the next level. The focus of this module is to improve overall athleticism by placing the focus on training the brain to control the body’s movements which allows each athlete to improve his or her skill sets. • • • • • •
Pitching The key to becoming an accurate thrower and a talented pitcher is a combination of key ingredients that will lead to being a successful pitcher/thrower. Teaching proper mechanics, which decreases the stress on the throwing arm is the foundation of our approach. Areas of focus: • Grip • Balance • Leg drive • Release point • Finishing Once we gain control of these elements, we can then learn more about mental approach, pitch grips, reading hitters etc.
Hitting Hitting focuses exclusively on analyzing the mechanics of player’s swing and then making adjustments to improve their swing path.
Areas of focus: • • • • •
Balance Grip pressure Weight shift Hand eye coordination Swing path
Hitters will learn balanced stance and soft hands are two important pieces we focus on when teaching our athletes. Weight shift, quick hands and meeting the ball out front are crucial for hitters. Once mastered, we can then focus on recognizing pitches (rotation in the baseball), taking pitches, using all fields and batters box presence.
Fielding and Throwing Fielding will cover the fundamentals required for each player to learn and play every position with confidence. This program is designed to focus on developing a player’s balance, hand-eye coordination, footwork and lateral movement.
Fundamentals taught: • • • • •
Creep step – taking two small steps forward and opening hands. Charge – aggressively moving toward the ball when it is hit. Breakdown – setting the feet while bending the anticipating the ball. Field – trapping the ball while bringing it to the mid section and cradle the ball in. Throw – after fielding the ball get your feet set, square the shoulders and deliver.
