Unit 6 Summary:
Sticky Situations
S
ome days it seems like life is an endless series of sticky situations. It’s hard to face the problems and challenges that don’t always have easy answers. In this sticky-themed unit, kids will discover that, no matter what sticky situation they find themselves in, God is much stickier. Kids will see that God is a faithful Covenant partner who sticks by their side no matter what. In this second Covenant and Kingdom unit, kids will continue exploring key Old Testament stories that will help them understand the big picture of relationship and responsibility from the Bible.

Welcome back to Kairos Quest, where we’re always on the lookout for what God’s up to in our everyday lives. For the last few weeks, we’ve been talking more about Sticky Situations, those times where life gets a little tricky and it’s tough to figure out what to do. We’ve been discovering that no matter how sticky our situation may be, God is even stickier. He is a faithful Dad who promises to stick with us no matter what. Speaking of things that stick together, I have a game to kick us off today that’s all about things that naturally go together.
Opening Activity: Perfect Pairs The purpose of this activity is to help kids see that a relationship with God and confidence in God naturally go together.
Instructions
How to Play: Go through a list of famous pairs (such as peanut butter and jelly), telling kids one half of the pairs and getting them to respond with the other half of the pair.
Relationship ce WITH God
Supplies
6 Relationship WITH God sign 6 Confidence IN God sign
Confiden IN God
Today’s game is called Perfect Pairs. It’s about things that always seem to go together — for example, bacon and eggs. That’s what I call a perfect pair. They are made to go together. So the way the game works is simple: I’ll name one half of a perfect pair, and you yell out the other half. For example, if I say peanut butter, you would say (kids answer) jelly. Here we go!
73
Say the first half of each perfect pair and let kids complete the other half.
6 Beauty and . . . the Beast 6 Macaroni and . . . cheese 6 Bert and . . . Ernie 6 Ben and . . . Jerry 6 Ketchup and . . . mustard 6 Lilo and . . . Stitch 6 Spaghetti and . . . meatballs 6 Hansel and . . . Gretel 6 Ken and . . . Barbie 6 Mickey and . . . Minnie 6 Chip and . . . Dale 6 Green eggs and . . . ham 6 Lady and . . . the Tramp 6 Salt and . . . pepper Great job with the game, guys. The reason we call these perfect pairs is that when you think of one, you automatically think of the other one. Today I want to talk about another perfect pair. Hold up “Relationship WITH God” sign. A relationship with God and… Hold up “Confidence IN God” sign. …confidence in God. These two things should go together like peanut butter and jelly. When you have one, you should naturally have the other. Think about it: If you’re God’s kid, then God is your heavenly Dad. That means your Dad is the King of the universe. He can do anything for you, in you, and through you. Because you have a relationship with God, you can have confidence in God.

Bible Story Set the teaching area with a tall ladder at least eight feet tall that can represent Goliath. Make sure the ladder is sturdy enough to climb on. To enhance the lesson, use a leather sling and five smooth, softballsize stones. Sometimes, even though we believe in God, it’s hard to believe that God can do big things in us. On days like that, our problems and the problems of the world seem way bigger than anything we can handle. But we’re not the first people to deal with this problem. Take the Israelites, for example. Remember, the Israelites were God’s special, chosen people. They were the ones God had promised to protect and provide for over and over again. God had rescued them from slavery in Egypt and given them their own special land just like He promised. Hold up Relationship WITH God sign. But even though they had this amazing relationship with God… Hold up Confidence IN God sign. … they didn’t have much confidence in God. The Israelites had these enemies called the Philistines. Everybody say, “Philistines.” Kids repeat. The Philistines were really tough bad guys who were always causing trouble for Israel. Today’s story begins when the Israelites and the Philistines were at war. The two armies had lined up on two sides of a big valley. Now the Philistines were scary enough, but what really freaked the Israelites out was that the Philistines had this warrior named Goliath who was absolutely huge. Let me show you what I mean. Climb the ladder as you talk about Goliath’s size. Stop at the points where your head is at the six-, seven-, eight- and nine-foot marks as you mention those levels in the next paragraph.
75

In our day, a man who is 6 feet tall is a fairly tall guy. But we see people this tall every day. What about someone who is 7 feet tall? That’s really big guy — definitely NBA material. How about someone who is 8 feet tall? That would be enormous — taller than anyone in the world today. But Goliath wasn’t 6, 7, or even 8 feet tall. The Bible says that he was more than 9 feet tall. Goliath was over 9 feet tall. Think about that. Goliath came out into the valley every day and said, “Choose a man and have him come down to fight me. If he wins, we will become your slaves. But if I win, you will become our slaves. Today, I defy you Israelites. Give me a man and let us fight.” Climb down from the ladder. But no one ever did, not even King Saul. Do you know why? They were scared. (Gesture to ladder.) Compared to Goliath, they all felt so small. They had forgotten that their God was big. They’d forgotten that… Relationship WITH God

…confidence in God.
Confidence So the Israelites just stood there IN God terrified. None of God’s people would fight Goliath — until one day a kid named David came to town. David was the youngest of eight brothers. His dad sent him to the battlefield to take food to his three oldest brothers, who were some of King Saul’s soldiers. But when David got to the battlefield, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Look up at the ladder as if it is Goliath. There was this 9-foot-tall giant making fun of God and God’s people, and David’s brothers and all the soldiers were cowering in fear. David was thinking, “Are you kidding me? Aren’t we God’s people? And isn’t God the most powerful being in the universe? Why is everybody so scared? God is way bigger than this guy!”
76
Why did David think this way? Well, for years, David had taken care of his family’s sheep out in the field. Whenever a bear or lion tried to carry off a sheep, God helped David defeat the animal and rescue his sheep. So David figured fighting off this giant Goliath wouldn’t be any different. David said to the king, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” David’s… Hold up Relationship WITH God sign. …relationship with God gave him… Hold up Confidence IN God sign. …confidence in God. God had been rescuing David for years, and so David knew he could trust God to take care of him today. So David went down to a stream (bend down and pretend to pick up stones) and chose five smooth stones and slipped them into his pack. Approach the ladder as if you’re David approaching Goliath. When David stepped onto the battlefield, Goliath took one look at him and saw that he was only a boy. So Goliath said, “What am I, a dog, that would come at me with sticks?” David said, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. The battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands!” As the giant moved to attack, David slipped one of his stones into the leather strap of his sling, swung it over his head, and let it fly and (run to the ladder) — BAM! The stone struck Goliath in the head, and the giant fell to the ground with a great crash. (Take the ladder to the ground. If possible, topple it over to create a big crash.)
77
It was amazing! This kid had taken out the 9-foot giant that all of the soldiers were too scared to fight. No one could believe it — except for David. David wasn’t surprised at all. David knew God. David trusted God, and David had seen God come through again and again. David’s… Hold up Relationship WITH God sign. …relationship WITH God gave him… Hold up Confidence IN God sign. …confidence IN God.

Bible Verse Our Bible verse this week comes from Psalm 118:6. It says, “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” Let’s say that together. Kids repeat. In other words, if God is with us, nothing else matters. Let’s pray.
Prayer Dear God, Thank You for wanting to be my Dad and my Friend. I know I can have confidence in You no matter how big my problems are. Amen

Welcome / Large Group Review Gather kids in a circle either on the floor or around a table. Welcome back to Huddle. Today we heard a fantastic story about how David found himself in a sticky situation but stuck with God and had the courage to face down Goliath.
6 Does anyone remember how tall the Bible says Goliath was? 6 Who’s the tallest person you’ve ever met? 6 What do you think it would have been like to face a warrior like that? 6 Why do you think David had the courage to fight Goliath? Today we saw that David’s relationship with God gave him something. What was it? (Confidence in God.) In the same way, as we get to know God better, we can become more confident that God can handle any problem we face, just like David was.
Huddle Activity 1: Everyday Giants The purpose of this activity is to help kids think about the big problems in their lives. How It Works: Roll out the paper giant and show it to the kids. Ask them to draw pictures of their own gigantic problems somewhere on the paper. After kids draw, let them share what they drew.
81
Supplies:
6 Paper giant (1 per group). Make this by drawing the outline of a 9-foot-tall giant on a long roll of drawing paper before Huddle.
6 Drawing supplies such as crayons, markers, or colored pencils (enough for each child)
We all face gigantic problems in life. For David it was an actual giant who wanted to fight him. For you it might be a big test you have to take at school or telling the truth about something that will get you in trouble. Your giant could be your parents getting divorced or a grandparent getting sick. It could be a bully or someone who makes fun of you, or maybe it’s something completely different. Now you’re going to have the chance to draw a picture of your gigantic problem. Unroll paper giant. This is my giant. Pretty scary, right? Actually, he looks kind of silly. But our gigantic problems don’t seem silly. I’m going to give you a few minutes to draw a picture somewhere on this paper giant that describes the biggest, most gigantic problem you’re facing right now. Give kids time to draw. When everyone is done, continue the discussion. Let’s take a look at some of your gigantic problems. Who wants to tell us about theirs? Give kids the chance to share. Be sensitive to kids’ problems. Even the problems they don’t seem like a big deal to you, they are a gigantic problem in the world of a child. Ask sensitive follow-up questions, such as “How does that make you feel?” or “What’s the hardest part about that for you?”
82
Huddle Activity 2: Five Smooth Stones The purpose of this activity is to help kids think about attributes of God’s character that will help them know Him better and build confidence in Him as they face their giants. How It Works: Go around the circle once, letting each child take a turn drawing stone cards from the Huddle leader’s bag. After a child draws the card, he/she will read it to the group and then place it in the middle of the circle. Once kids have read all the cards, pass out paper bags and place additional Stone Cards in the middle of the circle. Go around five more times letting kids choose their five smooth stones. Supplies:
6 Stone cards (5 copies of each set of 12 cards per group) – Each group will need five sets of the 12 Stone Cards. Place one set in a bag for kids to draw during the activity. Hold back the extra sets until kids choose their five smooth stones to place in their own bag.
6 Leader bag (1 per group) — Kids will draw these cards during the activity.
6 Paper bags (1 per child) One way we become more confident in God is by getting to know God better. What are some things we can do to get to know God better? Take answers from kids (talk to God, listen to God, do what God says, read the Bible, spend time with God, etc.). All of those things help us to get to know God like David did. They help us learn to hear His voice and act on what He tells us to do. The more we know God, the more we’ll be able to trust Him to help us face our giant problems. Pull out Leader bag with 12 stone cards inside. I have a bag here with some cards inside that tell us about what God’s like. I’m going to pass the bag around our Huddle. I want you to reach in, pull out a card, and read it to the group. (Huddle leaders may need to read the card for younger readers.) After you read it, place the card in the middle of the circle.
83
Do you remember what David did right before he went into battle? He went down to the stream and chose five smooth stones and put them in his bag for when he needed them. Just like David, we all face battles every day, and as we’ve already seen, all of us have some giant problems. So it’s time for us to prepare our bag. Pass out paper bags to kids. I don’t want you to take the bag home empty. I want you to pick five of these stone cards that help you remember that God will help you face your giant just like He did for David. Whenever you’re feeling discouraged or worried or afraid, you can to reach into bag, pull out one of these stones, and read it out loud to remind you that God can help you defeat any giant problem you face. We’re going to go around the circle, and when it’s your turn you can pick one stone card, read it to the group, and put in your bag. Place extra copies of the stone cards face up in the middle of the circle so multiple kids can pick the same cards. Go around the circle five times so that everyone gets five stone cards for their bags.

Bible Verse and Prayer Pass out Bible verse cards to kids. Today’s Bible verse is from Psalm 118:6. It says, “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” Let’s all read it together. Kids repeat. This verse reminds us that God was bigger than Goliath and that He’s still bigger than all of our problems today. Take prayer requests. Write them down so that you can pray over them during the week. Take time to pray together as a group. Encourage kids to pray for each other during the group time. You may want to close with a prayer like the following one. God, You are a big God. We know that no one and nothing is bigger than you, not even our problems. Please help us to be confident this week no matter what problems we face because we know You love us and will never leave us. Amen

Bible Story: David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17)
Family Challenge Go on a scavenger hunt in your backyard or in a nearby park looking for five smooth stones. The stones should be large enough to write on. After you find them, talk to your child about God’s character and brainstorm five things you know about God that help you have confidence in God in any situation. Use a marker or paint to write one word on each stone to remind you of God’s character. Place the five smooth stones on your dining room table this week to help you talk about God’s character each day.

Dinnertime Discussion At dinnertime this week, ask one of these questions to get your family talking. 1. What was the smallest problem you faced today? 2. What was the biggest problem you faced today? 3. Which seemed bigger at the time, your gigantic problem or God? 4. Which one of your five smooth stones would have been good to remember today? Use these questions to help kids have confidence in God’s character so that they can rely on Him on protect and provide for them no matter what problems they face.
