UPCOMING GAMES

With every team at least three games into league play, there are only two undefeated teams left: Christian Brothers and West Georgia. Christian Brothers is 4-0, while West Georgia is 3-0. CBU has 2 of the GSC’s top 10 scorers, as Jeff Larkin and Adam Dieball each average 15.6 points per game. The Buccaneers have also been helped by a trio of freshman, as Joe Laravie, Mitch Mays, and Brad Miller are three of the six leading scorers for the team. West Georgia has been led by Stephaun Branch, who ranks third in the league in points scored, fourth in field goal percentage, and fifth in rebounds per game. He also leads the Wolves in steals and blocks and is tied for second in assists. Shorter’s Phil Taylor continues to lead the country in scoring with 37.8 points per game and has guided Shorter to a 7-1 overall record this season, the best mark in the conference. Taylor was once again named the GSC Player of the Week, scoring 52 points in a game and averaging 41.0 points per game. The 52 points is the second highest mark in league history. He secured the conference’s single game record earlier this season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Phil Taylor, Shorter

Taylor wins Gulf South Conference Player of the Week honors for the third straight week after another set of impressive performances. In a pair of conference wins, Taylor averaged 41.0 points per game, 8.0 rebounds per game, and 5.0 assists per game. Earlier this season, Taylor set the GSC single game points record earlier this season with a 62-point performance. This week, he again surpassed the old record of 51 points when he scored 52 points against Mississippi College. Taylor is the country’s leading scorer, averaging 37.8 points per game. Just early on in his second season with the Hawks, Taylor has passed 1,000 career points with Shorter.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Joe Laravie, Christian Brothers

For the second time this season, Laravie is the GSC Freshman of the Week. He was also the honoree the first week of the season. In two conference wins this week for the Bucs, Laravie averaged 26.5 points per game, 3.0 rebounds per game, and 2.5 assists per game. Laravie scored 53 points in the two games this week; in the previous eight games, he had scored a total of 54 points. Christian Brothers currently sits atop the men’s basketball standings in the league, winning all four of its conference contests.
