Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy Week of October 17th, 2016 Grade 2 / Mrs. Molina
Dear 2-1 Parents,
October is flying by! All the students are working so hard! In Balanced Literacy, students continued to learn about the different types of communities. This week we began to learn about rural communities. Students learned that a rural community is usually farmland located far away from a city. We read the text, Country Kid/City Kid, written by Julie Cummins. Students made a Venn diagram to compare the differences and similarities of living in a city and in the country. Then students wrote a letter to one of the characters explaining what they learned and then made a connection to the character by finding something similar they do in their community. Students also read the text, City Mouse/Country Mouse and compared the foods within the two different communities by writing a small essay. This week in Mathematics, students finished chapter 2. Students learned to compare three digit numbers using the symbols, >, means, is greater than. The symbol < means, is less than. The = symbol means, is equal to. Remind your child to think of these symbols as an alligator’s mouth! The open side is always pointed to the bigger number because the alligator is hungry and always wants to eat the biggest number! We had our Chapter 2 test today! We will begin chapter 3 on Monday. Please keep practicing math at home! The website below is very helpful. https://sites.google.com/site/gomath2ndgrade/chapter-2/1-6-number-names In Religion, we had our Chapter 2 quiz on Tuesday. As we began Chapter 3, we learned that we all become members of the Catholic Church when we are baptized. We learned that all of the parishes worship and work together throughout different communities to help those in need.
This week in Social Studies we continued to learn how to be good citizens. We discussed the characteristics of a good citizen and what we can do in the community to be good citizens. We also continued to practice our map skills. We practiced reading maps of neighborhoods using the compass. In Science, we continued to learn about the planet Earth!
