SCHEDULE/RESULTS

THE MATCHUP WHEN/WHERE: 3:15 p.m. Saturday at the Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill. RADIO/TV: On JOCK 98.7 FM, with Mike Edwards calling the action. ON THE NET: All Drury radio broadcasts can be accessed through the DU athletics website, www.drurypanthers.com, where live stats are also available. THE COACHES: Steve Hesser is 101-44 in his fifth season at Drury; Marty Bell is 102-72 in his sixth season at Quincy. THE SERIES: Drury leads 19-13, including a 70-53 victory over the Hawks January 2 at Weiser. ABOUT THE PANTHERS: It’s come down to this for the Drury basketball Panthers ... win Saturday at Quincy, and get some help courtesy of a Missouri Science and Technology victory over Missouri-St. Louis in Rolla that same day, and the Panthers will make the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament for the fourth time in four years as a league member. A loss, and the Panthers have no chance. Drury is trying to sneak in as the third seed in the GLVC’s West Division, and a victory over the Hawks would pull the Panthers into the necessary tie; DU would hold the tie-breaker then by virtue of a sweep of the season series. However, if UMSL (14-12, 6-10) wins at Missouri S & T Saturday afternoon, to force a three-way tie with Drury and Quincy for the third and final spot in the West, the Tritons would hold the tie-breaker due to having the best record (3-1) in a round-robin of season results against Drury and Quincy. The Panthers are coming off a 76-69 home loss to Southern Indiana on Wednesday in which the Panthers led 69-67 inside of three minutes, but the Screaming Eagles scored the game’s final nine points to pull away. Senior forward Chris Ijames had 18 points and senior point guard Tim Brown added 14 points and eight assists to lead DU. ABOUT THE HAWKS: . Quincy, which will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, has been idle since an 80-67 loss at Rockhurst last Saturday, which snapped a three-game winning streak for the Hawks. In their January 2 matchup at Weiser, Drury put together one of its best halves of the season in rolling to a 44-23 halftime advantage over the Hawks, who committed 14 turnovers in the first half and 22 for the game. Tyler Burke, a 6-2 sophomore, had 18 points and Justin Brock 12 points to lead the Hawks in the first meeting. Brock, a 5-8 sophomore, averages 12.8 points to pace Quincy, which gets 12.1 points per game from 6-5 junior forward Billy Baptist and 10.8 points from 6-4 junior guard Mookie Pierre. The home team has won all seven meetings in the series since Drury joined the GLVC in 2005. PROBABLE STARTERSREAT LAKES VALLEY CONFERNo. 32 23 41 20 31

DRURY BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 2008-09 NOTEWORTHY ...

LAST TIME WE MET ....

In their January 2 matchup at Weiser, a 70-53 victory by the Panthers, Drury put together one of its best halves of the season in rolling to a 44-23 halftime advantage over the Hawks, who committed 14 turnovers in the first half and 22 for the game. Ijames had 17 points, Adam White added 12 points and 12 rebounds and Brown had 10 points and eight assists to lead the Panthers. Tyler Burke, a 6-2 sophomore, had 18 points and Justin Brock 12 points to lead the Hawks

IJAMES, BROWN CLIMBING THE CHARTS

With a team-high 17 points in Drury’s 89-59 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange on Dec. 13, Panthers’ senior Chris Ijames became the 36th player in the program’s history to top 1,000 points for his career.

Ijames had 18 points in Wednesday’s loss to Southern Indiana and now has 1,305 points for his career, good for 19th place on the all-time DU scoring charts. Ijames needs 37 points to surpass Tony King (1,341) for 18th place on the list. DU senior point guard Tim Brown had 14 points Wednesday and is now at 865 for his career, good for 45th on the all-time list. He needs 10 points to move past Kent Russell (874) for 44th place. Brown, after posting eight assists against UMSL, has 450 career assists and is sixth on the career charts; he needs another 14 assists to jump Jerry Alexander (463) and finish in the top five for his Panthers’ career. Paul Hauck is the all-time leader with 793 assists from 1971-75.

GLVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

University of Southern Indiana’s Jamar Smith is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. The junior guard led his team to a pair of conference wins this past week. Smith kept the Screaming Eagles in the running for the top seed in the GLVC West with two great performances for the week. On Thursday, Smith opened up with 21 points to defeat Missouri-St. Louis, 81-54. Smith also added four assists and three rebounds against the Tritons. Smith finished the week with a gamehigh 29 points, tying his season-best in the win over Missouri S&T, 94-73. Smith went 10-of-15 from the field, five-of-eight from beyond the arc, and pulled down nine rebounds. For the week, Smith averaged 25 points, six rebounds, three and a half assists, and 2 steals per game. Southern Indiana leads the conference in scoring offense averaging 86.3 points per game. Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Saint Joseph’s Andrew Helmer, Bellarmine’s Chartrael Hall, Drury’s Dusty Allen, and Lewis’ Dennis Thomas.

WHITE, LONG LOST FOR SEASON

Drury is trying to move forward now without two of its key components, with starters Adam White and Dominique Long lost for the season due to injuries. White, a 6-foot-4 senior, suffered a torn ACL and other injuries to his right knee when he was taken down on a breakaway layup just before halftime of a Jan. 10 victory at Saint Joseph’s. The Kansas City native was leading the team in rebounds (6.6 per game) and third in scoring (9.1 points per game) at the time of the injury, which brought to an unfortunate end a solid four-year career as a Panther that saw White - often described by Hesser as “a warrior” because of his gritty performances and effort - become not only DU’s best rebounder, but its best defender. White finished his DU career with 717 points and 484 rebounds. He started the final 72 games of his career and 82 in all at Drury. He had three double-doubles this season and five for his 97-game career. During its split of games in the Hoop N’ Surf Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii in mid-December, the Panthers suffered a blow when freshman standout Dominique Long was lost for the season after suffering a severe dislocation of his right ankle in the closing minutes of DU’s victory over Chaminade. Long was second on the DU squad in scoring (12.5 points per game) and rebounding (5.2 boards per game) at the time of the injury. He is expected to make a complete recovery and be ready to go for the 2009-10 campaign.

HALL SIGNS WITH PANTHERS

Drury added one player for the 2009-10 freshman class when it signed Springfield Kickapoo shooting guard Alex Hall during the early signing period in mid-November. The 6-foot-2 Hall, who was averaging 23 points per game at last check, will become the third former KHS standout in two seasons to join Coach Hesser’s Panthers. Current freshmen Dusty Allen and Kyle Vaughan also played for Coach Roy Green’s Chiefs, annually one of the top high school basketball programs in the state of Missouri. DID YOU KNOW? *Chris Ijames’ career-high 32 points vs. Missouri S & T on Feb. 14 marked the first time a Panther had topped 30 ore more points since Collins Harris scored 30 vs. St. Gregory’s on November 24, 2007. Ijames, fifth in the GLVC in scoring at 15.7 points per game, is averaging 17.8 points in GLVC-only games, also fifth in the league. *After registering double-figure steals as a team in six of their first 11 games, the Panthers haven’t done so in their last 15. *Drury is 12-1 in games it has led at halftime this season, but 1-11 when it trails at the break.
