#2 DRURY PANTHERS (20-1, 12-1) vs. #16 WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE RANGERS (19-3, 12-1) Thursday, February 13, 2014 (7:45 p.m.) O’Reilly Family Event Center - Springfield, MO Radio: JOCK 98.7 FM TV: Mediacom 22 Webcast: www.drurypanthers.com/showcase PANTHERS BACK AT THE O’ FOR SHOWDOWN WITH PARKSIDE The defending national champion Drury Panthers are home on Thursday night with a chance to avenge their only loss in their last 35 games at The O’ when Wisconsin-Parkside visits in a matchup of the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s East and West division leaders. The Rangers defeated DU 90-88 in overtime on January 5, 2013, shooting 63 percent from the field (32 of 51) and spoiling a furious Panthers’ rally from a 20-point deficit in the second half to force OT. That snapped a 13-game home winning streak for the Panthers at the time; Drury has won 21 in a row at The O’ since. The Panthers carry a nine-game winning streak into Thursday’s game - which could have huge NCAA-II Midwest Regional seeding/hosting implications (first rankings due out on Feb. 19) - while Parkside has won 12 of its last 13, the only blemish an 82-60 loss at current No. 5 Indianapolis on Feb. 1. SCOUTING THE RANGERS Coach Luke Reigel’s UW-Parkside Rangers feature one of the league’s top all-around talents in 6-9 junior Zygimantas Riauka (16.2 ppg, 9.2 rpg), one of four Parkside players scoring in double-figures. Parkside leads the GLVC and the nation in FG percentage (.528) and assists (18.7 per game) and is second in the league in assist/turnover ratio (18.7 assists to 11.4 TOs per game). Riauka is second in the league in rebounding (9.2) and blocked shots (2.05 per game) and fourth in FG percentage (.643), while Andy Mazurczak is third in the league with his 5.3 assists per game. LAST TIME OUT ... The Panthers picked up a 66-59 win at Illinois Springfield on Saturday to complete a 4-0 road swing in the league. Kameron Bundy led four DU players with 18 points, while Cameron Adams had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Nwelue added 12 points and seven boards. Ian Carter had three blocked shots, moving to No. 2 on DU’s all-time list with 108 - five back of leader Kevin Wells (113 from 1989-94). QUICK HITS ... The Panthers’ 20-1 start is the program’s best since the 1978-79 NAIA national champions began their season 23-1. The 1977-78 DU squad opened its season with 20 consecutive wins. ... Drury has won its last 11 games decided by 5 points or less, including an 8-0 mark in those situations this season. The Panthers are 48-20 in those games in Steve Hesser’s 10 seasons. ... Drury leads the all-time series with Parkside 6-2. They’ve split the last four meetings after the Panthers won the first four. ... Either Kameron Bundy (10 times) or Cameron Adams (nine times) - they have dubbed themselves the “K-C Connection” for the different spellings of their same first name - has led the Panthers in scoring now in 19 of their 21 games this season. ... Bundy’s team-leading 18.4 points per game are the most ever by a DU sophomore in Hesser’s 10 seasons. Alex Hall finished with an 18.3 ppg average as a sophomore in 2010-11. ... DU climbed two spots to No. 2 in this week’s NABC/Division II Top 25 national poll, its highest ranking ever in the NABC poll. The Panthers were No. 7 last season in mid-March when the organization released its final poll. before DU’s march to a national title. ... Drury will play host to Lewis Saturday in a 3:15 p.m. tipoff. It’s Homecoming and Senior Day, with seniors Ian Carter, Lonnie Boga, Shane Rudman and Mael Amenyedzi to be honored in pre-game ceremonies.

HEAD COACH STEVE HESSER Steve Hesser, now in his 10th season as the Drury men’s basketball head coach, has established the Panthers’ program as an annual contender for both Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA-II honors after DU captured both titles in their banner 2012-13 campaign. Hesser owns a 215-76 mark in his time at Drury, a .738 winning percentage that ranks among the top in the nation and in Drury’s storied basketball history. His Panthers have won 20 or more games now in eight of his 10 seasons and won or shared five GLVC West titles in seven years as a league member. Drury has also qualified for the NCAA-II Tournament in six of his nine seasons, including the benchmark 2012-13 campaign, when his Panthers finished 31-4 overall, won a school-record 23 straight games to close the season and defeated Metro State 74-73 in Atlanta on April 7 for the NCAA-II Championship after claiming their second GLVC title in early March. Hesser’s Panthers also won the GLVC in 2007-08. His GLVC regular season record since the Panthers joined the prestigious 16-team league is 114-45 (.717 winning percentage). Hesser’s teams have been tremendous at home over the years as well, finishing with a six-year mark of 78-13 (.857) in the venerable Weiser Gym before going 54-5 in four years in the O’Reilly Family Event Center. Overall, Hesser’s DU squads are 128-18 at home, 63-41 on the road, 65-14 in GLVC regular season home games and 49-31 on the GLVC road in nine seasons as a league member for the Panthers.

THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON For the first time at the NCAA Division II level, which it joined in 1994-95, Drury Basketball will enter a season with the tagline of “Defending National Champions” preceding every game in 2013-14. Coach Steve Hesser’s Panthers captured their first NCAA crown by defeating Metro State (Colo.) 74-73 in the title game last April 7 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga. Drury’s comeback from a 17-point deficit in the title game allowed the Panthers to win their 23rd consecutive game, a school record; they did not lose again after a January 10th, 72-69 loss at Indianapolis. Thanks to that amazing late-season push, the Panthers finished Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division play with a 16-2 league mark and then went on to claim their second GLVC Championship (the first coming in 2008) by sweeping through Indianapolis, Bellarmine and Southern Indiana to win the post-season tournament in Evansville, Ind. The Panthers then hosted the NCAA-II Midwest Regional at the O’Reilly Family Event Center, defeating Findlay, Michigan Tech and Bellarmine, to advance to the Elite Eight, where they dispatched of South Carolina-Aiken and defending national champion Western Washington to get to the title game matchup with Metro State. The Panthers finished 31-4 on the season, and enter the follow-up season searching for ways to replace a graduated trio of standouts - All-America shooting guard Alex Hall, Midwest Regional Most Outstanding Player and point guard Brandon Lockhart and versatile forward Teddy Simniok. Those three combined to score 42.6 points per game last season, or 52 percent of DU’s offensive attack. Hall, who finished his career as Drury’s third all-time leading scorer with 2,200 points and its career leader in 3-pointers with 389, is playing professionally in Spain, while Lockhart - the school’s career leader in steals (267) and No. 4 in assists (547), as well as No. 21 in career points (1,255) - is now a professional basketball player in Slovakia. KAM AND CAM - “THE K-C Connection” Without question, Drury’s attack this season has been led by the dynamic duo of junior forward Cameron Adams and sophomore guard Kameron Bundy. They’ve combined to lead the Panthers in scoring in 19 of Drury’s 21 games, including 10 times by Bundy after his team-high 18 points in Saturday’s 66-59 win at Illinois Springfield. Both have picked up their offensive games immensely after playing supporting roles last year on the national title team. Bundy has pushed his average from 5.2 points per game as a freshman to his current team-leading 18.4 points per contest; Adams, DU’s sixth man a year ago, has bumped his from 8.3 ppg as a sophomore to his current 17.1 points per game. HOME SWEET HOME While Weiser Gym was long a house of horrors for Panther opponents - Drury fashioned a 481-100 record over six decades in the former home of the program - the Panthers have continued that tradition of protecting their turf now in their fourth year of the $13 million, 3,100-seat O’Reilly Family Event Center. Drury finished 16-1 at The O’ last season, the lone blemish a 90-87 overtime loss to Wisconsin-Parkside January 5. The Panthers won their final nine games last season there, and with a 12-0 start at home this season, now carry a 21-game winning streak in their home building. Drury now is 54-5 all-time in The O’, including wins in 34 of its last 35 games at home. HESSER REACHES MILESTONE 200th WIN Drury head coach Steve Hesser, the reigning NABC National D-II Coach of the Year, made it 200 victories in his 10 seasons on the Panthers’ bench after DU’s 70-66 overtime triumph over Cameron on November 30 at the O’Reilly Center. Hesser is 215-76 in his time with the Panthers, a .736 winning percentage that ranks among the best among active D-II coaches and now puts him ahead of Bill Harding (a .730 percentage over six seasons with a 119-44 mark from 1965-71) as the tops in the tradition-rich history of Drury Basketball for coaches who were on the bench for multiple seasons. PANTHERS IN THE POLLS Drury started the 2013-14 campaign with a preseason ranking of eighth in the NABC Division II Coaches Poll, but moved up four spots to No. 4 in the first two official rankings of the season before climbing to third the past three weeks. Drury fell to seventh after the 85-77 loss at No. 2 Bellarmine on January 9, and had been at No. 5 for two weeks before moving back to No. 4 last week. This week’s ascent to No. 2 is the highest NABC ranking for DU Basketball in the program’s history. WINNING TIME After picking up a 78-74 victory at McKendree on Thursday, the Panthers have won their last 11 games decided by five points or less, including an 8-0 mark in those situations this season. What he refers to as “winning time” has been a staple of Hesser’s 10 seasons on the Panthers’ bench; he’s 48-20 in his DU career in games decided by 5 or less. Drury’s last loss in that circumstance was a 72-69 setback at Indianapolis on January 10, 2013. The Panthers are also 9-4 in overtime games in Hesser’s 10 seasons on the DU bench.
