DRURY PANTHERS (5-1, 1-0) vs. SAINT JOSEPH’S PUMAS (2-3, 1-0) 3:15 p.m. Saturday, December 4 O’Reilly Family Event Center TV: Mediacom 22

Radio: JOCK 98.7 FM Webcast: www.B2TV.com

GAME NOTES PANTHERS SEEK TO STAY ON ROLL AGAINST PUMAS Drury will look to push its winning streak to four games when the Panthers play host to the Pumas of Saint Joseph’s College in Great Lakes Valley Conference game No. 2 of the young season. Drury opened league play with a 92-62 thrashing of Illinois-Springfield on Thursday at the O’Reilly Family Event Center, while St. Joe’s picked up a 66-62, double-overtime victory at Rockhurst to open league play. The Panthers lead the all-time series with the Pumas 5-3, including a 96-86 victory last season in Rensselaer, Ind. SCOUTING THE PUMAS Saint Joseph’s, making just its second visit to Springfield since the Panthers joined the GLVC in 2005-06 (and first since January of 2007), got their road trip off to a good start with a 66-62, double-overtime victory at Rockhurst in Kansas City on Thursday night. The Pumas led by 10 points with just over five minutes left in regulation before the Hawks charged back to force the first OT, and shut out Rockhurst over the final 1:59 of the second OT. Phillip Collins, a 6-3 junior, had 17 points and seven rebounds in 42 minutes to lead SJC, while Dayvon Sloan, a 5-9 sophomore, added 11 points. Marcus Jackson, a 6-6 senior, had 10 rebounds for the Pumas, who held Rockhurst to 33 percent shooting (22 of 66) for the game. Collins averages 13.6 points, Sloan adds 12.6 points and Jackson averages 7.4 rebounds to pace the Pumas, who lost 66-55 at Ferris State in their opener (DU beat Ferris 88-72 last week in the Owensboro Classic). The Pumas, in one of the toughest opening schedules in the nation in D-II, also lost at Findlay (71-54) and Grand Valley State (92-74). SJC was an NCAA-II Elite Eight qualifier last season, winning the Midwest Regional as a No. 8 seed under coach Richard Davis. LAST TIME OUT FOR THE PANTHERS Drury received a tremendous effort from its reserves in Thursday’s 92-62 win over Illinois-Springfield, as the bench guys combined for 60 of DU’s 92 points on the night. That effort was led by the career-high 21 points from senior SEMO transfer JaJuan Maxwell in just 17 minutes of work as Maxwell hit 9 of 12 shots from the field. He joined Alex Hall and Ian Carter in pulling down seven rebounds each to lead the Panthers to a 41-40 edge on the boards. Drury led 44-33 at the half, and Hall hit three 3-pointers in the first 1:37 of the second half to spark an 11-0 DU run that sent the Panthers on their way. SHARE A TOY, SHARE THE JOY Drury will be conducting its “Share A Toy, Share The Joy” fundraising campaign to help make Christmas brighter for youngsters in the Ozarks in partnership with the Council of Churches of the Ozarks during Saturday’s 1 p.m. GLVC doubleheader with Saint Joseph’s at the O’Reilly Center. All fans who donate a new toy to the bins near the entrance to the arena for either game will receive in exchange a coupon good for a free admission to an upcoming Drury basketball game. For more information on the program, please visit www.ccozarks.org.

DRURY HEAD COACH STEVE HESSER Steve Hesser has established the Drury men’s basketball program as an annual contender for both Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA-II honors now in his seventh season at the Panthers’ helm. Hesser owns a 129-53 mark in his time at Drury, a .709 winning percentage that ranks among the top in the nation and in Drury’s storied basketball history. His Panthers have won 21 or more games now in five of his six full seasons and won three GLVC West titles in five years as a league member. Drury has also qualified for the NCAA-II Tournament in four of his six seasons, including the 2009-10 campaign, when the Panthers were 23-7 overall and won the GLVC West yet again, finishing with a 15-3 league mark. His 2007-08 campaign was Drury’s most rewarding as a D-II member to date, as the Panthers posted a final mark of 25-5, captured their first GLVC championship courtesy of a GLVC Tournament title in a thrilling one-point overtime win over Lewis at Weiser Gym that culminated in a third straight NCAA-II Tournament trip. Hesser’s GLVC regular season record since the Panthers joined the prestigious 15-team league is 64-29 (.688). Hesser’s teams have been tremendous at home over the years as well, finishing with a six-year mark of 77-13 (.857) in the venerable Weiser Gym before this year’s 3-0 start in the new $13.5 million O’Reilly Family Event Center on the DU campus.

NEWS AND NOTES PANTHERS PICK TO REPEAT AS GLVC WEST CHAMPIONS Drury is picked to repeat as champions of the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division, receiving 14 of the 15 first-place votes and finishing with 66 points, well ahead of second-place Rockhurst (45 points). MissouriSt. Louis is tabbed for third and received the other first-place vote (to go with 42 points), followed by Missouri S & T and Maryville. Bellarmine is the preseason favorite in the East Division and Saint Joseph’s in the North. PANTHERS IN THE POLLS Drury was No. 21 nationally in the D-II Bulletin Top 25 Preseason Poll and headed the “Others Receiving Votes” category in the NABC Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll, but fell out in both cases after the 84-80 loss to Southwest Baptist. The Panthers have appeared in one of the national Top 25 polls at some point in each of Hesser’s seven seasons at the helm. DRURY SIGNS DEREK DANIELS IN NOVEMBER NCAA PERIOD Drury has added its first recruit of the NCAA’s fall signing period when Mountain View-Birch Tree Liberty High School standout Derek Daniels signed an NCAA letter-of-intent to play for the basketball Panthers. Daniels is a 6-foot-5, 215-pound senior forward for the Eagles who averaged 30.1 points and 13.2 rebounds per game as a junior in a season cut short by injury He averaged 21.7 points and 10.0 rebounds his sophomore year, when he was named the South Central Association most valuable player, and poured in 17.3 points and grabbed 9.1 rebounds as a freshman for Liberty High. Daniels also played AAU ball with the Arkansas Wings, national champions this past summer in the 17-and-under category in Orlando, Fla., after going 9-0 in the tournament field of 204 teams.

DRURY QUICK FACTS

NEWS AND NOTES PANTHERS MOVE INTO NEW O’REILLY FAMILY EVENT CENTER FOR 2010-11 Drury’s basketball Panthers and Lady Panthers have now moved into the new $13.5 million O’Reilly Family Event Center this season. The 3,100-seat facility ranks as one of the finest NCAA-II arenas in the country, and comes complete with seven luxury suites, the 4,500 square foot CoxHealth Athletic Training Center, a large banquet hall, Panther Pride team store and several other amenities. It’s opening closed the door on six decades of history in the old Weiser Gym on campus, where the Panthers posted an all-time mark of 481-100. PANTHERS, MEDIACOM REACH DEAL FOR SIX TELECASTS IN 2010-11 Drury Basketball will appear on Springfield’s Mediacom Connections 22 cable TV channel (MC 22) six times throughout the 2010-11 season with live telecasts followed by a couple of replays in the following days. The Panthers’ first-ever game in the O’Reilly Center, an 88-69 victory over Upper Iowa, was the first game to be televised of the season. Other TV games, all home contests, are December 4 vs. Saint Joseph’s, January 17 vs. Wisconsin-Parkside, January 29 vs. Missouri-St. Louis, February 5 vs. Northern Kentucky and February 14 vs. Missouri Science and Technology. ... AND SOME NATIONAL TELEVISION LOVE, TOO The Panthers will also have one nationally televised game this season, as the February 20 contest with GLVC rival Rockhurst - a 3 p.m. start at the O’Reilly Center -will be shown live on CBS College Sports. That’s also the date for Drury’s annual Homecoming festivities in addition to being the final game of the regular season for the Panthers. PANTHERS ON THE RADIO, INTERNET AS WELL All Drury basketball games, home and away, can again be heard in 2010-11 on JOCK 98.7 FM in Springfield, and are streamed on the internet at www.radiospringfield.com, with John Miller calling the action. All Panther home games and several GLVC away contests can also be seen on a pay-per-view basis ($7) through web telecasts by American One/B2 Networks at www.b2tv.com. Live in-game statistics for all DU home contests are also available by clicking the “Panther Fan Central” on our athletics website, www.drurypanthers.com. HESSER’S PANTHERS COME UP BIG ON THE GLVC ROAD ... While Drury is notorious for being tough to knock off in Weiser Gym, the Panthers have excelled on the road in GLVC play in coach Steve Hesser’s six seasons as a league member. The Panthers are 28-19 on the GLVC road during his tenure. ... AND IN TIGHT GAMES, TOO Hesser’s Panther squads have also developed a reputation as one of the toughest teams to beat when things get tight. In games decided by five points or less, Drury is 33-16 in Hesser’s seven seasons. His teams are also 35-10 in February games in his time at Drury. DRURY BASKETBALL AMONG NATION’S ALL-TIME WINNINGEST PROGRAMS Drury enters the 2010-11 campaign ranked as the fourth winningest basketball program in NCAA-II history with 1,426 total victories in its 102 years of hoops. That trails only Central Washington (1,600 wins), Central Missouri (1,526) and Northern State (1,491) on the all-time charts for D-Ii schools (though Drury spent the majority of that history as an NAIA member). HALL AMONG DU FRESHMAN GREATS Alex Hall finished his inaugural collegiate campaign leading the Panthers with a 16.6-point scoring average, earning GLVC Freshman of the Year, ALL-GLVC Second Team and Daktronics All-Midwest Region Second Team honors for his efforts, which included a career-high, 36-point game in a win over Rockhurst and three games in which he tied the Drury single-game mark for 3-pointers made in a contest with eight. Hall’s 482 points were the most by a DU freshman since the Panthers made the move to the NCAA-II level in 1994-95, and second most all-time behind the 504 scored by former Panther great and career scoring leader Lonnie Holmes in 1991-92.
