Science Technician
SALARY
Scale 3 points 14 - 17 (depending on experience) Actual salary £14,032 - £14,759
HOURS
32.5 hours per week x 38 weeks per annum. Daily hours from 8.30am to 3.30pm. (Reviewed annually according to timetable requirements)
PURPOSE OF JOB
To provide assistance and support the teaching of science, principally in the area of Biology, but also in the areas of Physics, Chemistry and General Science, as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
To support the students and teachers by providing the physical resources needed to ensure effective learning. Preparation and maintenance of apparatus and materials and the observance of safety precautions in laboratories, preparation rooms, lecture rooms and other science accommodation within the school

Responsibility for maintaining a safe and secure working environment in the Science Technician rooms. Keep workspaces organised and free from hazards.
2.
Simple preparation and assembly and storage of science apparatus and materials, as directed, for use in the laboratories during lessons, which may be of all standards, up to ‘A’ level.
3.
Ensure the laboratories are clear and tidy of all apparatus and any spillage’s of chemical; the cleaning of laboratory benches and equipment following completion of lessons. Compliance with regulations and undertaking safety audits as directed under the Health and Safety at Work Act/COSHH regulations.
4.
The safe storage of apparatus and materials; reporting to teaching staff any deterioration and defects in equipment, materials and of supply services (electrical/gas/water). Simple repairs. (Examples of apparatus and materials (not exhaustive): Bunsen burners, laboratory packs, water stills, biological specimens, varying solutions, poisons, voltmeters, oscilloscopes, etc).

To maintain machinery and equipment in accordance with Health & Safety requirements.

Assistance with maintenance of stocks of consumables, preparation of draft requisitions and the keeping of stock record limits.
7.
Administrative tasks include; raising orders, providing equipment and materials for practical lessons, filing, photocopying, stock-taking, etc.
8.
To carry out other relevant duties as may be required, commensurate with the responsibilities of the post.
Continued Professional Development To take responsibility for personal professional development, in conjunction with the Line Manager, keepingup-to-date with developments related to school efficiency.

Knowledge of basic scientific apparatus and procedures.
Qualification in Science at Level 2 or above.
Genuine interest and ability in supporting young people in a professional and caring manner.
Able to use scientific techniques in preparing for appropriate practicals. Experience of working in a laboratory.
Knowledge of health and safety procedures e.g. COSHH or willingness to learn.
Attitudes and Approaches
