Esgob Llanelwy The Bishop of St Asaph
February 2017
To: All Licensed Clergy, Licensed Lay Ministers and Mission Area Wardens
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ Bishop’s Visitation 2017 It has been the ancient duty of the Bishop to carry out a Visitation of his diocese every three years or so. 2017 marks the occasion for my third General Visitation of the diocese and I look forward very much to spending time in each mission area as we seek to support each other on the journey of faith and stimulate each other in growing our church communities as places of welcome, hope and spiritual nourishment. Since my last Visitation in 2013/14 we have seen much change in our organisational structures as we have implemented our 2020 Vision plan. We have begun the move towards a more collaborative structure of church life with lay and clerical ministries complementing each other in spiritual leadership, and churches working closer together in sharing the joys and shouldering the challenges of ministry to 21st century Wales. 2017 is an opportunity to allow this new reality bear fruit, to turn our focus away from structural change, and to focus on growth in our personal discipleship, in the spiritual ethos of our church communities, and in developing our outreach to our communities with the good news of our Saviour Jesus Christ. You will find the schedule of Visitations at the end of this letter. I also enclose my Articles of Inquiry for your completion and return to Esgobty by the date indicated on the document. I have deliberately tried not to burden you with a lot of questions, but to focus on the crucial questions concerning our life and growth. The Visitations will take place on Sunday afternoons and will begin with a meeting with me so that we can discuss together the life of the mission areas and I can respond to the issues raised in the Articles of Inquiry that I am asking the Clergy, Lay Ministers and Mission Area Wardens to respond to ahead of my visit. All Licensed Clergy, Licensed Lay Ministers and Mission Area Wardens are obliged to attend the Visitation. I should also like to encourage the attendance of anyone in the mission area who would like to participate, especially members of the Mission Area Conference.

Please make a diary note of my visit to your mission area now and I look forward to being with you later in 2017. With every blessing. Yours sincerely
