EWING GREEN TEAM Working Towards Building a Sustainable Ewing
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH WHAT: COMMUNITY FESTIVAL (COMFEST) 2012 WHERE: TCNJ CAMPUS DATE: OCTOBER 6, 2012 The Ewing Green Team has been participating in Ewing’s Annual Community Festival, a long standing tradition in Ewing Township, since its inception in 2009. The Team’s participation was collaborative with the Ewing Environmental Commission in our early years, but in 2012 the members of the team focused on educating Ewing residents about its own mission in order to encourage participation by Ewing residents. The major focus in Ewing in 2012 was on educating the public about sustainability – what we can do as citizens, what our municipality can do to help, and about the Green Team and how citizens can get involved. “It’s important in our current economy and especially for future generations to create a more resilient community that can weather economic and resource shifts”, said John Hoegl, Chair. Green team leadership was excited about its growing and diverse team with a presence on the Township website and Facebook, and its own brand new website. The Team provided representation (8 or 9 team members plus student volunteers) from each of its projects throughout the day, tips on sustainable living and activities for kids. There were sign-up sheets to for residents to indicate interest in Green Team projects and also in expanding the Community Gardens in town. Attendance for the day was estimated at hundreds of residents and students. Nineteen Ewing individuals signed up expressing interest in the Community Gardens alone and another seventeen signed up for more information on the Green Team sign-up sheet. The team promoted its activities in an article in the October 2012 Ewing Observer. See Meet the Green Team at Community Fest October 2012, page 13.
