WRESTLING UPDATE LIVE IT
VOLUME I, ISSUE IV
MESSAGE FROM COACH AZEVEDO My first season as head coach of the Dragons has come to a close. It has been such an exci:ng year! I want to thank the team, the Drexel athle:c department, and all of our alumni for welcoming the new coaching staff and my family with open arms. We are off to a great start. I'm very proud of what this program has achieved this season: qualifying three wrestlers to the NCAA tournament, star:ng the Pinners' Club, nearing the comple:on of fundraising for the Jack Childs Locker Room, hos:ng a very successful Flo Na:onals, and bringing in the #17 recrui:ng class in the na:on. PINNERS CLUB We‘re happy to say the Pinners’ Club was a great success! This “FUN raiser turned out to be just that, a lot of fun. The wrestlers really got into the fact that with their success on the mat, they could earn money for the program. Our fans enjoyed it as well. We had 30 very generous contributors totaling $220 per pin. Six wrestlers combined for a total of 17 pins, earning close to $4,000 for the program. Aus:n Sommer, 157 lbs. led the way with six pins. For those of you that had to cut a big check, you can thank Aus:n next :me you see him!

The 2012 Flo Na:onals High School Wrestling Championship brought thousands to Drexel's campus for its third annual tournament. California walked away with the highest team score while Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Maryland rounded out the top five in the tournament's first year of team scoring by state. Drexel had five signees par:cipate while three finished runner up, including Mah Cimato, 138 lbs, Connor Moran, 170 lbs, and Gage Harrah, 195 lbs. Jason Fugiel and Clay Lutzow, both from Crystal Lake, Illinois, also par:cipated. I'm extremely pleased by the performance of our incoming freshman. To have three future Dragons in the finals of Flo Na:onals was incredible. These guys will have an immediate impact on the program. Flo Na:onals was a great success for Drexel wrestling. We had over 2,000 wrestlers, coaches and fans on the campus of Drexel University. I'm very proud of the event and all the hard work that we, as an athle:c department, put in to make it all happen. This moves us much closer to our goal of $150,000. We can now reach our mark for the project by selling six lockers that have yet to be named. A giu of $2,500 can secure your name on a locker in our new facility. This new space will provide a home to our team and ins:ll a sense of pride within each of our wrestlers.
