The challenges leaders face in today’s highly competitive environment continue to grow in complexity. These challenges require strategic, tactical and critical thinking and also demand that more be accomplished in less time. Leaders must be on their game at all times, leaving little margin for error. No matter the business sector, there are common traits that effective leaders share. We will explore the question, “Are leaders born or trained?” Mark has been in the grocery business for more than 33 years, starting as a Courtesy Clerk for Safeway. He has worked in a variety of roles through his career including Store Director, District Manager, Director of Operations, several director roles in merchandising and now serves as the Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing for Farm Fresh in Virginia Beach. Mark has also spent several years as a Retail Business Consultant, working with Independent Business Owners and as a representative of Supervalu’s wholesale business. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Masters Degree in Business from the University of Phoenix and serves as an adjunct professor for Concordia University. He has facilitated the training and development of highly potential leaders and often quotes, “You cannot grow what they do not know.” Mark has been married to his best friend Lisa for 28 years, they have three children, currently reside in Virginia Beach and he enjoys spending free time on his sailboat.
