Moorhead Hockey Opportunity Revisited Playoff hockey is as exciting as it gets. Over the past few weeks, Minnesotans especially have been fortunate enough to watch outstanding hockey games. In addition, we’ve been lucky to watch some of the games best compete every shift. Case in point, with their season on the line, Nino Niederreiter and Jared Spurgeon were lifted to stardom with outstanding goals scored late in the game. Yet, the only thing that we get to see is the end result. Newly crowned Minnesota folk heroes; willing their team to victory late in game seven. What we do not get to see is the countless number of hours dedicated to their craft. These young men have been given outstanding natural ability, sure. But they’ve also taken their given ability and perfected it with work. It cannot be overstated that practice with a purpose cannot be replaced. These small time commitments add up in a hurry. The next few months are important opportunities for young athletes to refine their skills, with just a little bit of time set aside. Instead of sleeping in, get up and stickhandle. Rather than watching a movie, grab a buddy and shoot a few pucks. On a rainy day, head over to the youth rink and take advantage of ice times set aside for your age level. Who knows, maybe those small time commitments here and there can pay off and you could be that person scoring an overtime game winner! Jon Ammerman Moorhead High School Hockey

DIDJA KNOW…. HAT TRICK-When a player scores his third goal of a game… Rumor has it that a Toronto haberdasher gave players in the 1940s free hats if they would score three goals in a game. The term however, probably evolved from cricket. In 1858 a cricket player in England took three wickets with consecutive balls, an incredible trick. As a reward, his club gave the bowler a new hat, hence the name "hat trick". A natural hat trick is when a player scores three goals in a game, in a row. That is to say that no other player on either team scores in between.

ARENA NEWS With the weather being cold and wet (and snowy!) the turf on the north side is being used quite a bit for spring sports. We will take the turf back out the middle of May and put the ice back in for summer camps and tournaments, and then put the turf back in the end of June for the summer. We’ve been doing a lot of deep cleaning in the concessions area and re-painting the locker rooms and hallways, as well as work on both rinks while the ice is out. We also will be changing out some of the lights and ballasts on both rinks to brighten up the ice. Through the generosity of Jason Blake, former spud and NHL player, we will have a skating treadmill installed in our rink this summer. More info coming on it’s use, etc. Watch the website for open hockey times once the summer starts! Thanks, Denny
