FAMILY MEMBERS Family can either make your life more productive or less productive in both business and in life
How do you boost your productivity with family members? Whether you’re married or not, or have kids or not, typically you have family. And, in most cases, you don’t get to choose your family; they choose you. They can either make your life more productive or less productive in both business and in life. I have found three tips that make my life more productive with my family. I have a family of four. There’s me, my wife Aimee, my son Gabriel and my daughter Breanna.

Tip #1: The ‘what I appreciate most about you’ game We play this during breakfast because during dinner I’m typically on a virtual event or teleseminar. So dinner isn’t the time we normally share together. For us, it’s breakfast. What we do is go around the table and say, “What I appreciate most about you today is…” In the beginning, it’s a little awkward. It may even sound silly, but after a while, you live into it. You find that what the people closest to you

appreciate most about you is very meaningful. And by just stating and uttering what you appreciate about them, it makes you feel better for the rest of the day.
Get clean and clear feedback of what a 10 looks like for the people you care about

Tip #2: The ‘on a scale of one to ten, how did I do’ game I learned this game from Les Hewitt, Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield from their book The Power of Focus, which is a great book that I recommend you pick up. Here’s what happens. Let’s say you’re about to resolve an argument or engage in something where it demands a result with someone close to you, whether it be with a family member or friend or any other intimate relationship. After you’re done, you ask, “On a scale of one to ten, how did I do?” For example, after my wife Aimee and I have argued, once we’re done resolving that argument, I’ll say, “On a scale of one to ten, how did I do?” If she says, “8½,” then my second question is, “What would have made it a 10?” Then she gives me her vision of what a 10 looks like. It doesn’t matter if I agree with her version or not, what matters is that it’s her vision and I’m getting clean and clear feedback of what a 10 looks like for her.

That’s what you want to do with family members; have clear, concise and simple communication so you can get more done faster better and easier. After all, that’s what productivity is.
By spending private time with them, you become more productive with family members

Tip #3: Have a date night or one-on-one time with a family member It could be an uncle or aunt. It could be your child or spouse. I call it a date night, and I have it with my wife, Aimee, once a week. I also have it with my kids once a week. That’s our private timeout. I go out with my daughter Breanna, and we go to sushi. I go to the batting cages or to a ballgame with my son Gabriel. I go out to dinner with my wife Aimee. It’s one-on-one time. It’s intimate, and during that time, we get to exchange private information, which is different than being within the group. That’s how you become more productive with family members — by spending private time with them. One of the things I’m certain of is that when you have agreements with family or those who are closest to you, you’re a lot more productive. Rules don’t work. Rules are one-way, but agreements are two-way where you have almost a covenant between two people.
