THE ROCK STANDARD
WORDS FROM THE DOC... I hope that everyone enjoyed their winter break. We are very excited to see everyone at the club again preparing for the upcoming spring season. With the first monthly newsletter I wanted to highlight some things that we are looking forward to that are coming up at the club.
Partnership Training- In 2012 our club established a partnership with the Columbus Express and Cutters soccer club that will continue to grow in 2013. We started by building a relationship with our Academy teams to make sure that our club philosophy’s for those age groups were the same and that we got an opportunity to play each others teams each season. We expanded this winter to include additional training and games for U13/14 Boys and Girls. We have been very pleased with the progress that the players have made over the winter months. The staffs are continuing to meet to discuss the possibilities of expanding the program.
Spring College Clinics- We will be hosting a few
universities. Previous colleges that have run clinics at our club include IU Men, IU Women, U of I Men, U of I Women, ISU Women and Butler Women. These clinics are free to all of our players. They are run by the college team’s coaches and players. Clinics are currently in the process of being scheduled for this spring.
Spring Team Camp- Will be on Saturday, March 23 from 9:00am-3:00pm this year. Camp is for our all of travel teams. Teams that have a game that day will have some guest coaches later in the season. This is another great opportunity for our players to be coached by some of the top coaches and players in the Midwest. Previous camp coaches have come from U of I, IU, University of Wisconsin, University-Illinois Chicago, Oakland City University and Chicago area youth clubs. We are currently putting together this spring team camp coaching staff. -Matt Wilhoit

[email protected] Academy The Academy is back and better than ever. After a two-month hibernation, the young guns in SCSA’s Academy are eager to get the ball rolling, the scissors cutting and the rainbows… well… rainbowing. With numerous new faces, the Academy community continues to grow though its strengths reside in its relational approach to the game. The introduction of the Juggle Club proves to be an opportunity for the skillful players to showcase their talents. Be on the lookout for Academy boys and girls running around sporting the Juggle Club tshirts with pride and excitement. The motto for the winter training sessions is “player development equals repetition,” which was taken from the NSCAA coaches convention put on in Indianapolis and attended by multiple staff

coaches at SCSA. The focus will be on teaching the proper technique. As always, the atmosphere at which the training sessions will take place will be one saturated with energy, high-fives, dancing, positive coaching and celebration. The Academy is looking forward to what the sunshine of the spring will bring, but until then, the girls and boys of the Academy will continue to make defenders’ days terrible. Double scissors, nutmegs and high-fives, Coach Mark

[email protected] 4v4 Winter Classic This year SCSA hosted our very First Annual 4v4 Winter Classic at the Rock. This was a great opportunity to create a unique indoor experience during the winter season for all players. SCSA teams had the chance to compete with many different soccer clubs around Indiana. The teams consisted of 6 players. To add more excitement and competitiveness to games, keepers were thrown into the mix. The tournament was open to U8’s and older.
VOLUNTEER CALL OUT
The 24-minute games made it a fun day tournament. The turf made soccer conditions quick and tricky, but teams enjoyed the challenge. Players had to execute perfect touch, creativity, and team shape to be successful. The Champions in each division for boys and girls received custom designed SCSA T-shirts. We are excited to make the Winter Classic at the Rock an annual tournament...so start practicing your moves.

IU MEN’S SOCCER
RECREACTION An update from Asst. Doc, Nick Hargett The fall season saw the addition of two new age groups and our first annual Kohl’s Cup Recreational Soccer Festival. SCSA continued to provide quality training for both coaches and players. We were excited to have a both a U10 girls and U10 boys division. The Kohl’s sponsored end of the season event allowed players to play multiple games with a festival atmosphere complete with a speed booth and prizes. We look forward to growing the event to include other area recreational teams in the coming seasons.
IU Men’s Soccer to the MLS (Top to bottom: Luis Soffner, Eciq Zavaleta, Caleb Konstanski) We are proud to announce the three Indiana Soccer players that were drafted into the MLS mid January. Zavaleta, 10th pick in the first round was selected by the Seattle Sounders. Also, in the first round Soffner was picked 36th by New England Revolution. Then Konstanski was picked up in the Supplemental Draft by Chicago Fire as the 61st overall pick. Good LUCK!
Konstanski, captained Indiana University to an 8th National Championship. After making the NCAA AllTournament team he was selected by the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer.
