Volume XXIV, No. 24
Spiritual Excellence What is virtue? According to Greek scholar, W.E. Vine, virtue is spiritual excellence (1996). The word carries the idea of valor in the spiritual sense. J.N.D. Kelly, in Black's New Testament Commentary: The Epistles of Peter and of Jude, says the Greek term "clearly denotes a specific quality, probably moral courage or moral energy (1999, 306)." Therefore, those adding virtue to their faith will stand up for that which is right. Bible figures like Joseph, Daniel, Ruth, Paul, Mary the mother of Jesus and above all Christ Jesus are examples of this characteristic. Christians are likened to soldiers of the Lord. 2 Timothy 2:3 reads, “...endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." As soldiers, they must fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12). In addition, soldiers are to be prepared and fully armored for the battle at hand. The battle for Christians is against spiritual evils. In Ephesians 6:10-19, the whole armor of God is to be worn by each Christian. With this armor and mindset, the Christian can live with valor. How does one apply this value? First, one should pray and evaluate his or her spiritual health. Second, one should formulate a plan of action to address any spiritual deficiencies. Third, one should study the life of Jesus Christ because he is the ultimate spiritual example of godliness. Finally, one should get involved with a ministry that allows him or her to serve others. -Robert A. Randolph
