Green spring cleaning ideas that are kind to Mother Nature Ingredients: 1/2 cup vinegar 2 tablespoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon lavender essential oil Directions: Dissolve baking soda in vinegar, stir in lavender and pour into the water during your washer's rinse cycle. Line dry clothes for maximum green value. Or, if you must use a dryer, add a wool dryer ball to shorten drying time and soften clothes. To boost the fresh scent of lavender, sprinkle several drops on the dryer ball or on a paper towel and add to the dryer during the cool down cycle. * Prepare a multi-purpose cleaner to help brighten and freshen surfaces throughout your home. Mix two tablespoons of unscented liquid soap with four drops of lemon essential oil and two drops of tea tree essential oil. Pour the mixture into a gallon of warm water. Use this multi-purpose solution with a sponge mop or rag to remove dirt from floors and hard surfaces such as countertops and appliances. * Stock up on natural cleaning supplies such as lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils, baking and washing soda, Borax, white distilled vinegar, spray and squeeze bottles, natural bristle scrubbing brushes, old newspaper, cotton dusting cloths and hemp or jute fiber scrubbing cloths. * Instead of chemical air fresheners that can irritate allergy sufferers, make your own room fresheners using cotton balls soaked in essential oil. Store in decorative ceramic dishes out of reach of children and pets. For bedrooms, lavender is relaxing. Lemon and other citrus oils are invigorating for bathrooms, and cinnamon and clove impart mouth-watering aroma to kitchens.

(BPT) - It's not necessary to use harsh chemicals and toxins to achieve a cleaner, fresh-smelling home this spring. Homemade cleaning products and earth-friendly tactics can help you clean green. Here are green cleaning ideas and a supplies list that will make Mother Nature happy: * Begin by decluttering, which requires no chemicals at all. As you're disposing of items you no longer need or want, be mindful of ways to keep them out of the waste stream. Donating gently used but no-longer-needed items such as clothing, furniture and books is a great way to reduce waste and cut clutter at the same time. * Clean windows instantly brighten your house inside and out, and they're one of the easiest household cleaning chores to do with natural tools. A simple solution of white vinegar and water (about two tablespoons of vinegar per gallon of water) makes an effective, low-cost and green window cleaner. Spritz on windows using a spray bottle and use newspaper instead of paper towels for a streak-free clean. Don't like the smell of vinegar? Straight lemon juice works just as well and smells distinctly like spring. * Pull out the white vinegar again to mix up a great floor cleaner that works well on surfaces from hardwood to vinyl to tile. You'll need to add three or four cups of vinegar to about a gallon of hot water. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil - peppermint or lemon are popular choices - so that when the vinegar aroma evaporates, the wonderful scent of the oil will linger. * Laundering linens is a cornerstone of spring cleaning. Mass marketed liquids and dryer sheets, however, rely on softening chemicals and petroleum-derived fragrances to impart softness and scent. Try this simple, natural fabric softening recipe from the essential oil experts at Aura Cacia:

Is your home prepared for warmer weather? (StatePoint) Warmer weather is just around the corner, which means higher temperatures. But does it have to mean higher energy bills too? The answer is no. There are numerous ways to keep your home cool and bills low this summer. After a few months off, it

If your costs have significantly increased, simply contact a qualified HVACR technician — they can help determine the source of the problem. Buying a home after marriage By Deena Weinberg

If you and your partner are excited about buying a home and don't want to wait until you get married, there is good news and bad news: The good news is that barring any financial hurdles, unwed couples can apply for loans and mortgages (as separate applicants) and make their homeownership dreams come true. However, should any snags occur in their relationship, unmarried partners do not have the same legal protections as married couples, and breaking up co-ownership of a house can be a messy ordeal. Alternatively, if both individuals have good credit ratings, couples buying a home after marriage are better able to qualify for loans and/or put down a down payment. The downside is that if one spouse has poor credit or a high debt-to-income (DTI) ratio, it will affect the other spouse's ability to secure a loan. Hence, the question remains: Should couples buy a house before or after marriage? Homeownership obstacles for unmarried couples There are many incentives for couples to buy a house before they tie the knot. Whether their decision is driven by a favorable buyer's market, by the intention to start building equity or, until recently, by a desire to benefit from the first-time buyer tax credit for unmarried couples (which expired as of June 30, 2010), there are many problems unmarried couples may run into, starting from when they apply for a home mortgage. While banks generally view married couples as one unit, unmarried couples must apply separately and are assessed as individual applicants. Since some banks require both parties to qualify for a mortgage, problems with either one of their records can put a dent in their quest to buy a house. Furthermore, if couples who own real estate together part ways before they say, "I do," the pathway for resolving property disputes -- i.e., equity, property division, buy-out provisions -- is a bumpy one. Indeed, real estate lawyers admit that the laws regarding property rights for unmarried couples are murky,

and therefore recommend that unwed partners establish a legal contract of their own. Get it in writing! If you intend to buy a house with your partner before marriage, the experts advise that you both sign a legal agreement to avoid altercations down the road. Your contract should fill in the blanks as to who pays and who receives what regarding expenses, mortgage, taxes, capital gains, property title and more. Credit ratings and buying a home after marriage If you and your fiancee are planning to buy a home after marriage, here are some credit rating pros and cons to consider: Pros: Your individual credit scores will not change. If both you and your spouse have good credit histories, your chances of qualifying for a mortgage loan increase when you apply as a couple. With your combined income, you may qualify for a bigger loan and be able to put down a larger down payment. Cons: If you apply jointly for a mortgage and your spouse has bad credit, it can affect your ability to secure a loan or to secure the loan amount you need to buy your desired home. You can apply for a mortgage alone, but with your single income you may only qualify for a lower amount. How to improve your spouse's credit The good news is that even if you or your spouse has had a poor credit rating in the past, you can help rewrite history and improve your credit score in the following ways: Include your spouse as an authorized signer on your credit card. Payments made on time are recorded on both of your payment reports and will boost your partner's score Encourage your spouse to work to pay off debts and decrease high debt balance. Once you have weighed the pros and cons, all that's left to do is decide whether you and your partner will sign on the dotted line before or after you sign your marriage certificate!
