So far this year, fall recruitment has been spectacular. We currently have added sixteen young men that I believe that will greatly benefit the chapter. The entire initiate class is very excited about what AGR has in store for them and are looking to get involved right away. We are also still looking into recruiting a few more guys this semester and I have a bright outlook for next spring’s recruitment class. Thank you all for the recommendations for great young men so that we can further improve our chapter! - Brother Jordan DeLong, VNR-Recruitment

On Sunday, September 21st we invited the women of the Association of Women in Agriculture to join us in a friendly competition of volleyball in order to gather canned goods for donation. With the help of 50 men and women between both organizations, we were able to gather over 150 canned goods that will be donated to our local food bank. To show our gratitude and celebrate the success of the event, we will be serving supper to the women of AWA the following Thursday the 25th. We currently have another service event planned with AWA, and look forward to another semester of service and socializing! - Best, Devon Miller, Brother 1569

Plans are underway to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Alpha Gamma Rho Iota chapter’s founding in 1916. A fun filled and informative event is scheduled for Friday evening, April 8th and Saturday April 9th, 2016 in Madison. We have reserved the Concourse Hotel as our venue to accommodate overnight guests and host our main activities. Early plans include pledge classes meeting for dinner at one of the many of the downtown Madison restaurants Friday night and then reconvening later that evening at the Concourse Hotel for dessert. Saturday events include a tour of the UW campus and chapter house, several workshops and discussions, our annual meeting and then a special Saturday evening banquet honoring Iota Hall of Fame inductees, scholarship and chapter awards and other special events commemorating a century of valued existence on the UWMadison campus. The Iota Foundation is also planning a special fund raising program celebrating the accomplishments of the past 45 years since its inception and raising resources to help lay the foundation for the next 100 years. Please reserve April 8th and 9th of 2016 on your calendars. We are looking forward to a great event celebrating our Alpha Gamma Rho heritage and culture that was an important part of our college experience. - Bob Hagenow & Corey Geiger, Co-Chairs

Dave Dickson led five UW teams to championships at the National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest. He’d won the event himself when he was in college and was a highly regarded cattle judge who had judged more cattle shows at World Dairy Expo than any other show official. The Department of Dairy Science has announced the creation of a $775,000 fund to help dairy science students defray costs of attending events that are a key part of their education. The David P. Dickson Foundation is establishing the fund, named for late “Dr. Dave” Dickson, to cover registration fees, travel and other expenses associated with participating in dairy judging and Dairy Challenge contests. Dickson, who died in 2010, was a UW-Madison dairy science professor from 1966 to 1996 and continued to serve the university and the industry after his retirement. His family is making the gift to ensure that his legacy survives in the communities that meant the most to him. “If you knew Dave, there was never any doubt what he loved most—family, cows and the University of Wisconsin. The Dickson family’s gift to the UW-Madison dairy judging team was the clear way to tie all of his passions together.” Dickson was especially proud of his role as a coach of UW dairy cattle judging teams—a role he continued well into his retirement. He led Badger teams to five national championships at the National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. His teams also won 12 titles at the national contest for oral reasons, the part of the competiton in which contestants explain the rationale for their judging decisions. Dickson emphasized oral reasons in his coaching as a way to help his students develop communication and critical thinking skills. UW dairy science department chair Kent Weigel regards Dickson’s gift as yet another of “Dr. Dave’s” contributions to the education of students and farmers and the advancement of dairy science in Wisconsin. ,URQPDQ:LVFRQVLQ $Q$*5:LQQHU Former Iota Chapter advisor Brad Garrison has been awfully busy these last several years. Most notably, he’s changed his residence from Madison to Kansas City, as well as his title within Alpha Gamma Rho, to become National AGR Director of Development. As of September 7th, you can add another title to his credit, Ironman. Earlier this month, Brad completed Ironman Wisconsin in Madison. He did so by swimming 2.4 miles in Lake Monona, bicycling 112 miles through some of Madison’s hilliest suburbs, and running a marathon through downtown Madison. Brad nicknamed his bike “Eleanor” after reading several of Eleanor Roosevelt’s inspirational quotations. One of his favorites being: Look fear in the face. “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” The Ironman Triathlon is often called one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. What makes this feat even more amazing, is that Brad only began running three years ago. “The thought of running a marathon, much less an Ironman, could not have seemed more unlikely to me than traveling to the moon,” he said. He began a rigorous training program last February, logging up to ten hours of exercise per week. He steadily increased the intensity throughout the year, and by August this year, he was committing up to 25 hours per week to training. “Ironman day in Madison is awesome, you could really sense an energy in the city throughout the weekend,” he said. “And after training mostly solo, my reward was experiencing Ironman with 2,500 of my closest friends!” - Derek Johnson, Iota # 1501

Iota Chapter is primed for another good semester this fall. In only a week, the quiet summer house was filled with activity as brothers returned from their summer vacations. The house is full this semester and we warmly welcomed Brother Jake Greshik as our new resident advisor. Recruitment is a big area of focus so that we can continue to keep the house full in the future. It’s looking like we are going to have a large recruiting class thanks to all the hard work of the men of Iota. We encourage brothers to keep their doors open so that they can bond with new members as well as older members. I can sense a lot of excitement from the guys so I’m sure that this year will be another great year for Iota Chapter. - Brother Mark Kendall, Noble Ruler
