The Queen’s field hockey team had a very successful season this year. We had a very competitive training week and we were blessed with many talented incoming athletes. By the end of the season and going into playoffs several first year players were making significant contributions on the field: Justina Johl (Surrey, BC), Nicole Dye (Vancouver, BC), Annabel Irwin (West Vancouver, BC), Olivia Follick (Vancouver, BC), Emslie Attisha (Vancouver, BC) and Amanda Thoo (Nepean, ON). Along with the guidance and skill of a core group of upper year students - the Gaels fought to remain in third place throughout the regular season and we maintained that position by winning against the Dalhousie (10) and then winning against York (2-1) in the Bronze Medal Game. Congratulations to all of our players! This is such a huge accomplishment for women on the team who have been working hard since 2012 when Queen’s was last place in the league. Thank you for all of your support both financially and in person in the stands cheering us on! We have a fantastic group of parents who attended our parents’ weekend and our games at OUA playoffs. We hope to see many of you back next season. As always we encourage recent and older alumni to come back to Queen’s when we play at home or check our schedule on line and introduce yourself if we are closer to your home base when we play away.
Athlete Spotlight – Fiona Downey Fiona has been both an inspiration to younger players on the Queen’s team and to local high school players. She has been a leader on and off the field for all five of her years at Queen’s. Before coming to Queen’s Fiona played for Handsworth Secondary school in Vancouver, B.C. for 5 years, 4th place at the provincial championships in 2009. She also played for the West Vancouver Field Hockey club from the age of 8. Fiona was named captain for the Gaels in 2013 and helped lead the team to their first OUA playoffs in 6 years where they finished 5th. This achievement was part of Fiona’s decision to come back to Queen’s and play a 5th year as sweeper where she continued to help decrease the number of goals scored on her team. Fiona made two game changing saves during the playoffs this season when the team won a bronze medal. She was recognized as team MVP both in 2013 and 2014 and was voted onto the OUA allstar team in 2014.
Alumni Spotlight – Erica Pearson Erica Pearson played field hockey for Queen’s from 2010 2013. She has since started her career as an analyst at RBC in Toronto. Being a part of the varsity club field hockey team was a large part of Erica’s time at Queen’s and she is still a proud alumni. Erica celebrated our win of Bronze and knows that her time at Queen’s contributed to the 2014 teams success. She says the standings and the results during her years on the team didn’t reflect the team’s full potential. Thank you Erica for the time you dedicated to Queen’s and for continuing to support those that are still part of the team. “The attributes of being a competitive, focused, dedicated, team player have very much carried forward into my daily life. The trading floor is a fast-paced, high intensity atmosphere and an athlete’s dream come true.” ~ Erica Pearson, Comm’14
