In the oil and gas industry, there are many processes and products that need your oversight. You inspect, review, evaluate and analyze work environments, products or procedures. At the end of the day, you’re all about safety, quality and best practices.
What does this career look like? Whether avoiding injuries by enforcing regulations that govern health and safety, or identifying defects or subpar products, prevention is your goal. You use a variety of inspection, repair, risk assessment and management tools. Quality Control and Inspection Professionals include a range of roles: • Regulatory Inspectors conduct inspections of oil or gas drilling sites, well abandonment operations, pipelines and other sites in order to ensure a company is complying with regulations. • Asset Integrity Inspectors provide technical support in developing techniques and technologies to prevent corrosion and that meet codes and standards, reduce failures, minimize operating costs and extend the life of company’s assets. • Quality Control Inspectors design, implement and maintain a company’s quality program.
Certification Some roles require specific certifications, such as: • Certificates of competency for in-service boiler and pressure vessel inspector • Non-destructive testing certification • Welding/Coating Inspector testing certification
HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING
What would I do? You apply the rules. Reports are a big part of your world. You monitor a project to ensure workers are doing the job well. You might monitor the installation of a new piece of equipment or test the concrete being poured for the foundation of a natural gas plant. Whether it’s testing product quality or processes, you’ll need to have a clear understanding of your client’s expectations. Often, there can be an overlap between what you do and the jobs of Health and Safety Professionals. You take pride in inspiring a safety or quality control mindset among others. Specific activities in this job may include: 4 Performing inspections and tests 4 Responding to reports of unsafe conditions, incidents or near-misses Training others on the use of integrity management programs

A post-secondary diploma or degree or trades certification in a relevant field, along with significant technical knowledge and experience, is required for most roles. Depending on the focus, the required education could include petroleum, chemical, mechanical and materials/ metallurgical engineering, welding, electrical/instrumentation, power engineering or non-destructive testing.
Certifications are available through the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) and National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE).
