Do not pre-wash your fabrics. Hand wash finished project in cool water, lay flat to dry. Press if needed. Press all fabrics with a dry iron. It is also helpful to use a pressing cloth to protect your fabrics.
Use a ¼" seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise noted.
Place fabrics right sides together when piecing. (RST means “right sides together”.)

PIECING
Dia. 1
1. Place one 2 1/2" Fabric A square on the left side of one 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Squares strip, right sides together (Dia. 1). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. Flip open the triangle formed and press (Dia. 2). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
Dia. 2
2. Place another 2 1/2" Fabric A square on the right side of the 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Squares strip, right sides together (Dia. 3). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. Flip open the triangle formed and press (Dia. 4). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance to make one Fish Tail. 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 with the remaining 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Squares strips to make sixteen fish tails.

4. To make one Fish Body, place one 2 1/2" Fabric A square to the top left corner of one 4 1/2" square, right sides together (Dia. 5). Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. Flip open the triangle formed and press (Dia. 6). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle 1/4" away from the sewn seam. 5. Follow Diagram 7 for the seam direction to add a 2 1/2" Fabric A square to each of the remaining corners of the 4 1/2" square to make one Fish Body (Dia. 8).

6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 with the remaining 4 1/2" squares to make sixteen Fish Bodies. 7. Lay out the sixteen assorted Fish Body Blocks and sixteen assorted Fish Tail blocks, to your liking, pairing up one tail to each fish body (Dia. 9). Sew the tail blocks to the body blocks to make sixteen 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" fish blocks. 8. Sew together four fish blocks, facing left, and five 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric B strips, alternating them to make the top row. Repeat to make the third row (Dia. 10).
Dia. 7
9. Sew together four fish blocks, facing right, and five 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric B strips, alternating them to make the second row. Repeat to make the forth row (Dia. 11).
Note: Each row will be pressed in opposite directions to help match intersections. Dia. 8
10. Starting and ending with one 3 1/2" x 29 1/2" Fabric B strip, sew together five 3 1/2" x 29 1/2" Fabric B strips and the four fish block rows, alternating them to make the quilt top (Dia. 12).
Dia. 9
11. Finished quilt top measures approximately 29 1/2" x 31 1/2". 12. Trim the backing fabric to measure 36" x 44".
QUILTING
13. Layer the backing right side down, the batting, and the quilt top right side up. Baste the layers together using safety pins or by hand using long stitches. Either machine or hand quilt according to personal preference. Trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete. 14. Sew one 1/2" black button to each Fish Body as shown on the quilt photo.

FINISHING 15. To make the binding, sew the three 2 ½" x 42" strips together; fold in half wrong sides together and press. 16. Start with one end of the binding, leaving a 5" tail unsewn. Align raw edges of binding with raw edges of quilt. Sew with an even-feed foot. To make each corner, stop about ¼" from the corner, pull the quilt away from the machine, fold the binding away from the corner and fold back down. Continue stitching from the corner. Stop a few inches before the beginning of the binding. Trim excess binding. Tuck raw end inside the folded end of binding and complete stitching. We recommend either of the following ways to attach binding:
Method 1 (hand stitched): Binding is sewn to the front of the quilt, turned to back and slip stitched in place. Method 2 (machine zigzag stitched): Binding is sewn to the back of the quilt, turned to the front. Pin or clip in place; sew using a matching thread.
