FLAMES HEAD TO LOS ANGELES FOR LOYOLA MARYMOUNT TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: The Flames are set to face Bucknell, UC Santa Barbara and host Loyola Marymount this weekend in the LMU Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. UIC will square off against each team twice in a round robin format. This marks the fifth tournament in six weeks for the Flames. UIC enters the LMU Tournament with a 5-14 overall record. THIS WEEK’S OPPONENTS

USF UNDER ARMOUR INVITATIONAL: UIC went 2-5 last weekend at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Florida with victories over Coastal Carolina and East Tennessee State. Senior Ashlee Ackerman was 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate with a team-high four runs scored. Freshman Alicia Abbott batted .333 on the weekend with two RBI and one stolen base. Senior Brittany Dixon and junior Sarah Clynes each notched a homer versus ETSU. Clynes was 2-1 in the circle with nine strikeouts in 18.0 innings pitched. The junior also picked up her first shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over ETSU.

UP NEXT: UIC hosts its home opener on Wed., March 19 at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader versus Central Michigan at Flames Field. IN THE LEAGUE: Senior Ashlee Ackerman not only leads UIC at the plate, but the centerfielder ranks eighth in the Horizon League with a .397 batting average. Ackerman is also tied for third in runs (11), while senior Brittany Dixon and junior Sarah Clynes are tied for fifth with 10 runs each. Clynes is tied for fourth place with four doubles. Ackerman is tied for second with 23 hits, while Clynes owns sixth with 18. Freshman Alicia Abbott leads the league with three sacrifice flies and ranks sixth with nine RBI. Clynes ranks in 13 pitching statistical categories. 2008 SEASON-HIGHS: UIC totaled a season-high nine runs and 10 RBI in a 9-1 victory over University of San Diego in five innings on Feb. 10. The Flames tallied 12 hits and six doubles against Colorado State on Feb. 17. UIC has totaled two home runs on two occasions. VERSUS CONFERENCES: UIC is 5-0 all-time versus Patriot League opponents (Bucknell), 4-6 against Pacific Coast Softball Conference foes (Loyola Marymount) and 2-11 against Big West Conference opponents (UC Santa Barbara).

SCHOOL RECORDS: Junior Sarah Clynes has assumed the role of staff ace since her arrival at UIC and currently ranks in the top 10 in the UIC career record book for complete games (47/7th), innings pitched (474.3/7th) and strikeouts (324/8th). HILLENBRAND INVITATIONAL: After falling to New Mexico State two weeks ago, the Flames got revenge on the Aggies with a 4-3 victory in their second contest of the Hillenbrand Invitational on March 29. Four players recorded a .300 batting average or better over the weekend. Senior Brittany Dixon led the squad with a .455 batting average. Senior Ashlee Ackerman ranked second on the team with a .412 batting average, while freshman Alicia Abbot (.333) totaled a team-best five RBI. Junior Sarah Clynes was 4-for-12 at the plate with one double and a home run against nationally-ranked Arizona. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Bucknell (3-8) - After four straight loses, Bucknell picked up a 10-5 win over George Washington on March 8. This will be the third tournament the Bison have participated in this season. Jessie Snyder leads the Bison with a .273 batting average. Snyder is tied for first with four runs. Alison Ford has totaled a team-best five RBI, while Lauren Frye has drilled four home runs. Loyola Marymount (15-9) - Eight LMU players are batting above .300 with J.J Hartung leading the pack with a .406 batting average. Three players have totaled 14 runs. Kirsten Slouber owns a team-high 35 hits, while Darcy Pagnini has racked up nine doubles. Chelsie Tysdal has tallied 22 RBI and five homers.

UC Santa Barbara (12-11) - The Gauchos head to Los Angeles for the second weekend in a row as the squad played in Loyola Marymount Round Robin Tournament, March 9. UCSB has picked up wins in three of its last four games. Tisha Duran leads the Gauchos at the plate with a .424 batting average. Duran owns a team-best 16 runs, 28 hits, four doubles, 24 RBI and seven home runs. STELLAR PERFORMANCE: Freshman Alicia Abbott led UIC with five RBI in five games at the Hillenbrand Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona. Abbott was 5-for-15 at the plate with one double, one run scored . The freshman also picked up a sacrifice fly versus nationally-ranked Virginia Tech. Abbott recorded a .400 slugging percentage and a .923 fielding percentage. The freshman was 1-for-2 with one run, one double and three RBI versus No. 24 Virginia Tech. Abbott then notched a hit and an RBI in a 4-3 win over New Mexico State later that day. Abbott was 2-for-2 with one RBI against Arizona on March 1. UIC SIGNEES: UIC softball signed Melinda Macias (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo), Ashley Hewett (La Palma, Calif./John F. LEAGUE PRESEASON: The UIC softball team was picked to finish second in the 2008 Horizon League preseason poll. Voted on by the league’s head coaches, the Flames received two of 10 first-place votes. 2007 Horizon League Regular Season champion Loyola was notched to finish first with 60 points and six of 10 first-place votes. UIC was close behind in second with two firstplace votes (53 points), followed by 2007 tournament champion Wright State with the final two first-place votes (50 points). Cleveland State earned fourth (41), while Valparaiso (35) and Butler (34) tabbed the fifth and sixth spot. Youngstown State (22), Green Bay (18) and Detroit (11) rounded out the final spots in the poll.
