MARIST IN THE NFL On September 20, 2015, history was made as the first NFL game featuring a Marist graduate on each team took place when the Miami Dolphins faced the Jacksonville Jaguars. Miami defensive end Terrence Fede was the first former Marist football player to be selected in the NFL Draft when he was chosen by the seventh round with the 234th overall pick in 2014. Jacksonville kicker Jason Myers was playing in his second NFL game after signing with the Jaguars in March of 2015 and winning the job in training camp. The Jaguars prevailed by a score of 23-20, largely due to Myers’ efforts. He hit a 58-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the first half, and a 28-yard field goal with 40 seconds to play for the winning score.

MARIST FOOTBALL

Million Dollar Challenge In September 2016, Marist announced the completion of the Million Dollar Challenge, a fundraising initiative designed to ensure the long-term future of football at Marist College. The goal was reached through the generosity of approximately 200 alumni, friends, parents, and fans of the football program. “Since coming to Marist, I have been struck by the community’s enthusiasm for Red Fox football,” Marist President David Yellen said. “The success of the Marist Million campaign is a testament to that support, and we are grateful to all who participated in this important effort.”

Shortly after the opening of Tenney Stadium, Marist received a $1 million challenge grant from the late Raymond A. Rich. Mr. Rich was one of the 20th century’s leading businessmen and industrialists as well as a good friend to Marist College. As part of this challenge, the Rich Estate matched each dollar raised exclusively for use by Marist Football up to $1 million, thus creating the $2 million endowment. “Ray Rich was a great friend of the College and, in particular, of Marist football,” Marist President Emeritus Dr. Dennis J. Murray said. “I know he would be pleased that his generous gift inspired such a broad outpouring of support from former players and coaches and other alumni and friends of Marist. I particularly want to acknowledge the leadership of Matt Daly and Tom Coyne in reaching the challenge Ray Rich had set forth.” Gifts received through the generosity of donors will help elevate the program and provide a vibrant atmosphere for future Red Foxes. The $2 million endowment will create a sustainable source of support for the Marist football program while providing student-athletes with opportunities to excel academically and athletically. “The success of the Marist Million campaign will help ensure that football remains a vital program here for future student-athletes and fans alike,” Marist Director of Athletics Tim Murray said. “Our program is stronger for the generosity of so many alumni and friends.” The rich football tradition at Marist spans more than 50 years. What began as a club program in 1965, now boasts a roster that includes players from 13 different states. The program began varsity competition at the Division III level in 1978, and was elevated to Division I-AA (now known as the Football Championship Subdivision) in 1993. The Red Foxes played in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League from 1994 until 2007, and won three league championships. “The great support that the entire Marist College community has shown for our football program is an inspiration to all of our players and coaches and will continue to be for generations to come,” Marist head football coach Jim Parady said. “We are grateful to everyone who participated in the Marist Million campaign.” Following the 2002 season, seven MAAC Football League schools disbanded their programs over the next six years. Over this time, Marist football continued its growth. The Red Foxes played their first season at Tenney Stadium in 2007. Marist played the 2008 season as an FCS independent after the MAAC Football League disbanded, and joined the Pioneer Football League for the 2009 campaign. In 2013, the Marist football team won a share of the PFL championship. The spring of 2014 brought national recognition to the Marist football program. Marist graduate Terrence Fede ‘13 became the first football player in school history to be selected in the National Football League Draft. Fede was chosen by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round with the 234th overall pick. In late August of 2015, Jason Myers ‘13 won the place-kicking job with the Jacksonville Jaguars and became the second former Marist football player to appear in an NFL game. In the second week of the 2015 season, Fede and the Dolphins traveled to Jacksonville to face Myers and the Jaguars, marking the first time two Marist graduates shared an NFL field. Myers connected on three field goals, including a 28-yard attempt with 40 seconds remaining which proved to be the game-winner in the Jaguars’ 23–20 triumph.

About the PFL

Marist’s PFL History

The 2017 season marks the 25th year for the Pioneer Football League – the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The PFL is a truly national conference with members on each coast and throughout the nation’s heartland.

On Feb. 28, 2008, a press conference was held at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field to announce that Marist accepted an invitation to join the Pioneer Football League, beginning in 2009.

The league still retains four of its charter members – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Drake University and Valparaiso University, plus the University of San Diego (joining in 1992) – which were joined in 2001 by Davidson College, Jacksonville University and Morehead State University. Campbell University joined the PFL in 2008, its first season of intercollegiate football. When Marist joined for the 2009 season, the league’s footprint further extended into the northeast. The league currently has 11 members, with Stetson University giving the league two teams in Florida starting with the 2013 season.

“We are proud to be included in a league with schools known nationally for their accomplishments in the classroom and on the football field,” Marist College President Dr. Dennis J. Murray said. “Marist fosters an appreciation of what it means to be a true student-athlete, encouraging success in academics as well as athletics. The colleges and universities in the Pioneer League share this same philosophy, so we feel we have found the right home for our football program.” In their first season in the PFL, the Red Foxes set a program record with a six-game winning streak as they finished 7-4 overall and 5-3 in league play. Marist won a share of the PFL title for the first time in 2013, going 8-3 overall and 7-1 in the league.

n October 6, 2007, a new chapter in Marist Athletics began with the dedication of Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. A record crowd of 4,621 was in attendance on a warm, sunny day as the Marist football team took on Duquesne. The stadium’s name honors Tim Tenney, CEO of Pepsi-Cola of the Hudson Valley, who provided the lead gift for the stadium renovation project. The Marist football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse programs call the stadium home, in addition to numerous club and intramural sports. Construction of the stadium started in October 2006 and was completed in October of 2007. The College retained the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP to design, plan and oversee the improvement project. This project enhanced and developed two key areas of the facility - the playing surface itself and spectator seating. In order to serve the five varsity programs that would compete at Tenney Stadium, the need for a synthetic playing surface was obvious. With this in mind, Marist officials selected the industry leader in synthetic playing surfaces, FieldTurf.

A M E N I T I E S

FieldTurf

Stone Work

West Berm

The original installation of the surface lasted six weeks, and began with the preparation of the subsurface. High volume drainage systems, along with weed barriers, went down and were covered by different sizes of gravel. The final sub-surface layer was composed of very fine sized gravel, similar to baseball warning track mix. Then the FieldTurf DuraSpine playing surface was installed. Painting consists of connecting the tick marks, allowing for the fewest amount of game lines to be painted thus allowing the field to look as least busy as possible with five programs (football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse) calling Tenney Stadium home. The original playing surface lasted for 10 seasons, and was replaced in the summer of 2017. The new surface is known as the FieldTurf Revolution 360, the company’s top-of-the-line model. The turf has permanent logos on it, with the Marist word mark and fox head below it at the center of the field. The words “Marist” and “Red Foxes” are painted in the end zones, and permanent goal posts were installed at both the north and south ends of the field.

A field stone, selected to mirror that of many of the already stone-clad buildings on campus, encompasses the entire grandstand’s façade. This time-consuming and artistic work adds to the building’s character and gives the impression that the grandstand has been a part of the campus landscape for years.

Along the west side of the site, formerly the location of the spectator seating, an additional spectator seating area has been established. This location is modeled after a Greek Amphitheaterstyle lawn seating area and accommodates numerous fans. There are three independent grasscovered tiers, each separated by a small stone-clad wall. The stone utilized is the same stone that is being applied to the grandstand, thus achieving a consistent feel and use of material venue-wide.

The renovation project consisted of removing the existing grandstand and press booth along the west side of the field and constructing a new precast grandstand structure along with a modern press booth, media booths and VIP suites along the east side of the field. Additionally, an athletic training room, team and officials’ dressing rooms, restrooms, concessions and storage space were incorporated in the area located under the spectator seating.

Seating The decision was made to move away from bleacher seating and move to the use of seatbacks exclusively. This allows for the greatest amount of comfort to be made available for spectators while attending a game or match at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Hussey Seating Corporation, based in North Berwick, Maine, won the contract for this project. They furnished and installed 1,744 “Legend” chair-back seats. This particular model gives the seating scheme and overall appearance a nostalgic look and feel.

Under the Grandstand

Graphics Enhancement Project In the summer of 2010, the Marist Athletics Department continued its branding efforts with a graphics enhancement project. This project incorporated both team rooms, the training area, the elevator foyer, and all walkways underneath the stadium. In addition to the new graphics, new red carpet and Pepsi coolers donated by stadium namesake Tim Tenney were added to the team rooms.

Within the understructure of the grandstand, or below the seating area, lie two 55-locker locker rooms. A laundry room, athletic training room and concession area are also open underneath the grandstand. Lexan glass along the grandstand’s rear exterior was also installed. This translucent glass allows light to enter the locker room spaces, while providing privacy to the users.

The new seating includes 1,744 chair-backs in the grandstand, with additional seating located on the West Berm, giving Tenney Stadium a capacity of 5,000. On May 6, 2015, Tenney Stadium played host to the first NCAA Tournament game on the Marist campus, when the Red Foxes’ men’s lacrosse team recorded a 10-6 opening-round victory over Bryant. Tenney Stadium has hosted Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships in women’s soccer (2007, 2012, 2015 quarterfinal round), men’s soccer (2008, 2012), women’s lacrosse (2010, 2013, 2017 - quarterfinal round), and men’s lacrosse (2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017). The 2017 men’s lacrosse championship game was broadcast live on ESPNU.
