Game Notes UNO MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES vs. SAN JOSE STATE • Tonight’s contest is the first meeting between the Privateers and Spartans. • SJSU is one of seven in-season home-and-home opponents for UNO, which last season went 5-3 in the first meeting against home-and-home opponents in 2011-12, while posting a 4-4 record in the second encounter. • The Privateers are 23-20 all-time in openers, including a 15-5 mark in home contests. UNO last won an opening game at Lakefront Arena in Nov. 2003 over Southwest Texas State. • UNO head coach Mark Slessinger’s squad went 13-2 at home last year, the best home record for the Privateers since Tic Price directed the team to a 13-0 result in 1996-97. Only Ron Greene (13-1) in 1969-70 posted a better mark than Slessinger for a first year coach. UNO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES vs. NORTHWESTERN STATE • UNO is 4-4 all-time against NSU, including wins in the last four meetings. The Lady Demons won the first four meetings between 1978 and 1980 and have not picked up a victory against the Lady Privateers since Nov. 1980. • NSU co-head coaches Brooke & Scott Stoehr will make their Division I head coaching debut against the Lady Privateers. Brooke was a member of a Louisiana Tech team that played that contested games against UNO head coach Keeshawn Carter, then a player under Joey Favaloro. • UNO senior guard Mirjam Sipos has led the team in scoring the last two seasons, including 12.1 points per contest in 2011-12 and 13.0 in 2010-11. UNO MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES vs SOUTHERN ILLINOIS • UNO and SIU split a pair of games historically with the Privateers losing 65-64 in 2 OT on a neutral floor in Evansville, Ind. on Dec. 30, 1977 before getting a 93-77 win on a neutral floor in Charlottesville, Va. on Dec. 7, 1986. • The Privateers will face SIU twice this season, challenging the Salukis on Dec. 17 as part of a season-long six-game stint away from the Lakefront. • Salukis’ head coach Barry Hinson will make his debut at the helm of the SIU program against UNO. Hinson spent the previous four years on Bill Self ’s staff at Kansas. Previously, Hinson spent nine seasons at Missouri State, leading the Bears to a 169-117 record with four NIT teams. Getting To Know Your Privateers

BENJAMIN JAMES

Sophomore Guard from Maurice, La. Q: What is your favorite food and why do you like that food? A: Right now, anything my mom cooks because she is a boss in the kitchen. Q: What is your least favorite food and why do you not like it? A: Liver, because it is nasty. My grandma made it and ate it, so I tried it and it was so disgusting. Q: Did you have a favorite sporting team growing up and why was that your favorite team? A: Colts, Celtics, and LSU. It was something I could watch with my family. With the Colts and LSU we were together, but not with the Celts. Q: What was your greatest sports moment? A: In high school every time I played basketball with my brothers. Q: When you met Coach Sless, what was your first impression? A: Man, this guy has some huge feet. My family and I were amazed by the size of his feet. Q: The one thing that you love about New Orleans and why? A: The team, the people, and my uncle, aunt, and cousins. Q: The person(s) who has influenced you the most in your life is? A: My dad and mom, they are the people who taught me everything that I believe today. Q: If you could meet one celebrity who would it be and why? A: Peyton Manning, I really want to see his work ethic and the way he approaches his craft. Q: Your goal in life is to do what? A: To be the best person and Christian that God allows me to be.

UNO Privateer Athletics Outreach The New Orleans men’s and women’s basketball teams have actively been promoting the 2012-13 season in the community, participating in a Privateer Pep Rally on the Northshore, a Mid-Day Madness on campus and various other events. Featured below are some pictures from a few of these outreach efforts.

Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mark Slessinger The 2012-13 season will be the second at the helm of the UNO program for Mark Slessinger. The native of Bloomington, Indiana became the 12th head coach in Privateer men’s basketball history on June 28, 2011. “Becoming the head coach at UNO is a culmination of a lifelong dream to be a NCAA head coach,” said Slessinger. “UNO is a university storied in tradition and history, and I welcome the challenge of bringing success back to the basketball program.” “Coach Sless” as he is affectionately known on the Lakefront hit the ground running in his first season. In his first season at UNO, the head coach had less than two months to re-recruit student-athletes from the previous season in addition to eight newcomers from the state of Louisiana. Forcing turnovers and pushing the pace, every member of the Privateer roster was involved on both ends of floor. In total, a school-record 13 players topped double-figures at least once as the team posted a 17-15 mark against a schedule of full-scholarship teams while having just three scholarship equivalencies. Off the court, the UNO men’s basketball team was visible on campus and in the community. The team’s presence parlayed into an increase in attendance with some of the larger student crowds since the team returned to Lakefront Arena in 2008. Slessinger prepared for his first NCAA heading coaching job by working for 11 years under Northwestern State’s Mike McConathy. Slessinger was the top assistant for McConathy – one of the winningest coaches in Louisiana history – while also serving as the school’s recruiting coordinator. 6

The University of New Orleans Privateers

The duo of McConathy and Slessinger not only graduated students at a rate of 85 percent, they turned around a NSU program that had struggled at the Division I level on the floor. During Slessinger’s tenure at NSU, the Demons won three Southland Conference titles and compiled signature victories over Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Oregon State and a 2006 NCAA Tournament first round victory over Iowa. Slessinger graduated from Aurora University with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education. He then coached at his alma mater as an assistant basketball coach during the 1995-96 season before moving on to Central Michigan, where he served as an assistant during the 1996-97 campaign. Following his run at CMU, Slessinger spent three years at Northland Pioneer College (Ariz.), the last two as head coach. His teams posted a 36-25 record with eight players signing on at the Division I level before he departed to join McConathy’s staff at NSU. Regarded in coaching circles as a strong recruiter, Slessinger has not only signed and coached student athletes from all corners of Louisiana, he has graduated them. “My comfort level and base in recruiting is rooted in the state of Louisiana,” said Slessinger. “During my tenure at NSU, over 70% of our rosters have been made up of Louisiana natives. Recruiting the best instate student-athletes that we can will be a top priority for our staff. “ Slessinger intends to recruit players that the city of New Orleans can call their own. “We need to build a program at UNO that the city will proudly call its own,” said Slessinger. “This needs to be a team that will play hard every night and work every day in the classroom and on campus.” “The name on the front of our jersey represents more than our team. It represents the University, our students, faculty, and staff. But most importantly it represents the city and the people we play for.” Slessinger resides in New Orleans with his wife, the former Toni Purvis of Williamston, N.C. The couple met in New Orleans.

The Friendly Confines of Lakefront Arena The permanent home of UNO men’s and women’s basketball, the Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena hosted its first UNO game on Nov. 26, 1983, when the teams hosted rival Louisiana State in a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader. Since then, the building has served as the home court for the school’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, while also having served for some time as the home of the volleyball program. After several years of renovations after being damaged by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, the UNO basketball programs moved back into the arena during the summer of 2008 after several years at the Human Performance Center. The HPC, now the exclusive home of UNO volleyball, located on-campus less than a mile from the Lakefront Arena, served as the home to the athletic department and both Privateer basketball programs from 2005 through 2008. The Lakefront Arena can accommodate 8,933 fans in comfort. Every theater-type seat offers an unobstructed view of the court. The Arena’s auxiliary gymnasium has room for two practice basketball courts or three volleyball courts and an indoor batting cage for baseball and golf. Adjacent to the auxiliary gym are eight locker rooms, a fully-equipped weightroom and a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility. Entering the 2012-13 season, the Privateers have amassed a 289-83 record at home including a 13-2 mark under head coach Mark Slessinger. In 27 years of playing at Lakefront Arena, the UNO men’s basketball team has posted winning marks in 26 seasons and defeated four top 25 programs.
