Our Current Unit of Study:

NW Native art We just started a unit on NW Native Art. We’ll be looking at traditional and contemporary works of art by NW Native Artists. Using close observation and investigation we will explore functional forms—art that also serves a purpose– from SAM’s collection. We will also use formlines to create stylized images in traditional and non-traditional ways. Like contemporary artists Robert Davidson and Jeffrey Verrege, we will take ovoids, u-shapes, split u-shapes, and s-shapes and turn them into something new and original. For the past two weeks we’ve been practicing our ovoids, u-shapes, split ushapes, and s-shapes. They’re trickier than you might think! After the MLK march we celebrated Blue Friday by looking at the original formline design for the Seahawks logo.

Essential Questions In every unit, there are some big questions we’ll explore while looking at and making art. Here are the questions we’re pondering during this unit:  

How can we “read” a work of art as text? How does art help us understand the lives of people of different times, places and cultures?

Learning Objectives Here are the things I want students to know and be able to do in this unit:       

I can identify and create formlines I can identify and create ovoids, ushapes, split u-shapes, and s-shapes I can use and care for art making tools and materials I can stay focused while following a multi-step process I can revise artwork after receiving feedback from a peer I can interpret art by referring to contextual information I can listen respectfully to others

Looking Forward

A combination of traditional Salish formline designs of salmon and trout using ovoids, u-shapes, and s-shapes.

We will be looking at the art of Jeffrey Verrege soon. He taught a workshop that I attended at SAM and I fell in love with his work. I think students will enjoy it, too: http://jeffreyveregge.com/
