Our Current Unit of Study:

NW Native art We are wrapping up our unit on NW Native Art. After exploring some older examples of traditional masks, baskets, boxes, canoes, and blankets featuring formline designs, we transitioned to a focus on NW Native artists today. We looked at the art of Jeffrey Veregge and I think it was the most engaged and excited I have ever seen these kids during “art in the dark” (that’s when I turn out the lights and we look at images on the big screen using the overhead projector.) Jeffrey likes to take comic book imagery and transform it using Cost Salish formline design. The result is amazing. If you’d like to see what we looked at, check out his website: http://jeffreyveregge.com/ Inspired by Jeffrey, we took the formline shapes we’ve been practicing and turned them into contemporary imagery.

Essential Questions In every unit, there are some big questions we’ll explore while looking at and making art. Here are the questions we’re pondering during this unit:  

Learning Objectives Here are the things I want students to know and be able to do in this unit:       

Using traditional Salish formline design, George created this bird.

How can we “read” a work of art as text? How does art help us understand the lives of people of different times, places and cultures?

I can identify and create formlines I can identify and create ovoids, ushapes, split u-shapes, and s-shapes I can use and care for art making tools and materials I can stay focused while following a multi-step process I can revise artwork after receiving feedback from a peer I can interpret art by referring to contextual information I can listen respectfully to others

Looking Forward Next we’ll explore the concept of migration through the art of Jacob Lawrence. His Migration Series depicts the journey African Americans made from south to north between the world wars in search of a better life.
