This guide will support parents and families with children in Biology 1 by helping you: • Learn about the Biology 1 Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and why they matter for your child. • Talk with your child’s teachers about what they will be learning in the classroom. • Support your child’s learning in practical ways at home. Florida students will continue to practice many of the same things you learned in middle grades, along with some important additional skills. Biology 1 students are learning this content: • Molecular and Cell Biology • Macromolecules • Cell Structure and Function • Cell Processes • Cell Theory • Classification of Organisms • Anatomy and Physiology
• Scientific Theory • Organisms, Populations and Change • Plants • Ecology • Biodiversity

Support Learning at Home Regardless of the grade level or school your child is in, you can encourage science inquiry at home in ways that are fun for you and your child. Try these ideas after school, on weekends and during the summer:
• Ask questions about biology topics and defining problems. For example, how are pythons impacting the Everglades or how does heredity help define our characteristics? • Plan and carry out investigations. For example, determine the type of food a certain kind of bird or squirrel is attracted to or determine the best type of soil for growing tomatoes. • Analyze and interpret data. For example, how many children are born with an inherited characteristic in different regions of the world or how many types of spiders are found in each of Florida’s ecosystems? • Engage your child to provide arguments on biological issues from evidence. For example, what is the case for and against drilling for oil in sensitive areas? • Allow your child to obtain, evaluate and communicate information on science topics. For example, develop and present on a topic of relevance to the community or at a family gathering. • Access student resources aligned to the standards at http://floridastudents.org.
Every child develops at their own pace. The activities in this guide are recommended age-specific guidelines for growing young minds.
