Get 1 cup dry measuring cup. Get long grain white rice. Get microwave safe dish with cover. Get liquid measuring cup. Get water. Get fork. Get potholders. Measure 1 cup rice.

WHITE RICE – Microwave Oven
Here’s how to cook about four servings of long grain, white rice in the microwave oven. Use in salads, as an ingredient in another dish, and as a side dish. It’s good to know these particulars: This recipe uses a microwave at full power. Because microwave oven temperatures vary, you may find that you need less or more cooking time than noted in the recipe. If you’re cooking two servings of rice, you will need 1/2 cup of rice and 1 cup of water, and in step 7 you will cook on full power for 3 minutes. No other changes. If you’re cooking eight servings of rice, you will need 2 cups rice and 3 1/2 cups water, and in step 7 you will cook on full power for 8 minutes. No other changes. Rice expands when it cooks, so be sure that your pot has double the space available. Measure 1 cup rice. Using the dry measuring cup, fill the measuring cup with white rice.

Put rice into dish. Put the rice from the measuring cup into the microwave safe dish.

Measure 1 3/4 cups water. Using the liquid measuring cup and water from the faucet, measure one and three quarters cups of water.

Put water into pot. Put the water from the measuring cup into the dish with the rice.

Mix together rice and water. Using the fork, mix together the rice and water until well blended.

Cover dish. Put the cover on to the dish.

Open microwave. Put dish in. Open the microwave oven door. Put the covered dish into the microwave oven.

Close microwave. Close the microwave oven door.
______10. Set microwave for full power – 5 minutes. Start. Set the microwave oven cook timer for five minutes at full power. Start the microwave oven. ______11. Open microwave. Open the microwave oven door. ______12. Put on potholders. Turn dish. Put the potholders on to your hands as an extra precaution. Using your hands, turn the dish one half turn. ______13. Close microwave. Close the microwave oven door. ______14. Take off potholders. Take the potholders off of your hands. ______15. Set microwave for medium power – 12 minutes. Start. Set the microwave oven cook timer for twelve minutes at medium power. Start the microwave oven.

______16. Open microwave. Open the microwave oven door. ______17. Put on potholders. Put the potholders on to your hands. ______18. Careful! Take dish out of microwave. Using your hands, carefully take the dish out of the microwave oven and put it on to a safe surface. ______19. Close microwave. Close the microwave oven door. ______20. Take off cover. Using your one hand and the potholder, hold the dish so that it is steady. Using your other hand and the potholder, carefully take off the cover from the dish and put it on to a safe surface. ______21. Take off potholders. Take the potholders off of your hands.

Here’s how to cook about four servings of long grain, white rice on the stove top. ______1.
Get 1 cup dry measuring cup. Get long grain white rice. Get pot with lid. Get liquid measuring cup. Get water. Get long handled spoon.

Measure 1 cup rice.

Put rice into pot.
______4.
Measure 1 3/4 cups water.
______5.
Put water into pot.
______6.
Mix together rice and water.
______7.
Put pot on to stove.
______8.
Turn on stove to medium.
Boil.

Careful!

Turn stove to low.
______11. Careful!
Stir.
______12. Careful! Put
on lid.

Turn off stove.

Simmer – 15 minutes.
Take pot off of hot stove burner.

Mix together rice and water. Using the spoon, mix together the rice and water until well blended.

Put pot on to stove. Put the pot on to a stove burner.

Turn on stove to medium. Turn on the stove burner to a medium heat.

Careful! Boil. Heat the water until it reaches a boil. Be careful to notice the water soon after it starts to boil.
______10. Turn stove to low. Turn down the stove burner to a low heat so the water simmers, rather than boils. ______11. Careful! Stir. Using your one hand, hold the handle of the pot so that it’s steady and safe. Using your other hand and the spoon, carefully stir the rice and water. ______12. Careful! Put on lid. Put the lid on to the pot. ______13. Careful! Simmer – 15 minutes. Let the water simmer for fifteen minutes. It’s important to make sure that the heat is low. If the water is absorbed too quickly (which is what a higher heat can do), the rice will be crunchy. ______14. Turn off stove. Turn off the stove burner.

______15. Careful! Take pot off of hot stove burner. Using your hand, carefully take the pot off of the stove burner it was just cooking on. Put the pot on to another stove burner (one that hasn’t been used recently so that it is cool) or on to another safe, cool surface. ______16. Let sit for 5 minutes. Leave the pot, covered, to sit on the cool, safe surface for five minutes before taking off the lid and serving the rice.
