The varsity crew had their bags packed and were off to Salem this weekend. They also were successful in packing their team and achieved our goal of keeping the group together through the first mile of their respective races. As the season progresses, we need to continue our efforts of training every day as a pack. As we continue to make this a part of our daily routine, it will in fact become a routine part of our racing and help us to attain our performance goals this year, both as individuals and as a team. It takes a great deal of consistent effort to make this happen. Each member of the team must be completely committed to keeping with their A, B, or C pack in practices. This is a great challenge on the base days, when we are trying to run consistent miles together. Wednesday intervals have been very successful, now it’s up to each of you to carry this through on Tuesday and Thursday each week. It is a bas(e)ic necessity for our team’s success. Keeping the pack together may be a bit of a struggle, but it is a struggle well worth battling through to gain the strength of the wolf that our team needs. Keep your focus, keep working on communicating with your teammates, and keeping forging the bonds with your friends and together we can achieve our goals and enjoy the fruits of our labor (hey, fruit is a good thing after a workout and meet…subliminal messaging at its pathetic worse, sorry).
Rise of the Champions (Club) The Champions Club is now an official component of our program. To become a member of the Champions Club, a member of the cross country team must meet the following standards: 1. 2. 3.
4. 5.
Academics: 3.25 (merit role) minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) Prepare for life. Consistency: 1 day or less of unexcused absences during the season (at school and at practice). Leadership: recognition by the coach as a leader of the team, an individual that strives to make their teammates better. You must be prepared to provide the coach with examples of leadership that you have provided to your team, the school, or your community. Courage & Improvement: Establish 3 (lifetime) PRs during the season. Dare to work hard and have the courage to push yourself to accomplish what you may have thought impossible. Commitment: a member of the cross country team for a minimum of two seasons.
Be champions. For week one, let’s congratulate CECILIA HARDY and JOEL RAZO for their top ten performances at Salem on Saturday. Both Cecilia and Joel provided their teams with low scoring from their respective first runners, which can greatly enhance team success (single-digit scores from your number one runner essentially makes the team race a four-person competition; I’d be happy to explain this to you if you’re confused). Cecilia and Joel also provide their teams with great leadership by how they carried themselves this weekend, and hopefully will continue to demonstrate the right way to do things to their fellow Harriers. Congratulations to both of you!
