Hammond School News

Across the Federation It’s hard to believe July is round the corner and preparaons are beginning for the end of term. Children at both schools are busy preparing for their open days and summer concerts and are already beginning to think about their transion to their next classes. Thank you to all those who a2ended our joint Sports Day. Each event was a celebraon of many sporng skills for all the children allowing all of them to shine and achieve. Many congratulaons to Green Team at Hammond School, a very well deserved win. Congratulaons also to Green Team at LVS who worked hard to achieve their success. It was lovely to see so many families stay to enjoy a picnic too, giving a chance for children from both schools to relax and mix with their friends. Ques#onnaires The results of our annual quesonnaire have also been analysed. Many thanks to all those who took the me to let us know your thoughts and views: understanding our strengths and areas for development from a parent perspecve is an important part of

improving what we do. There were many areas of success and the vast majority of parents are very sasfied with the educaon and provision of both schools. Several broad areas were idenfied as areas for improvement which will be included within our School Development Plan 2015-16. The outcomes of the surveys were also discussed at this month’s Parent Forum or Class Reps groups at each school. All staff have been involved in idenfying and agreeing key priories for development over the coming year. These will focus around Strengthening our Pracse in embedding the many improvements we’ve made to learning and assessment over the past year: Leadership, Technology for Learning, Maths, Literacy and looking at how we communicate and promote the many examples of excellence we see across both schools. Once the details of these have been finalised we will share these with you. Upda#ng Logos and Uniform As you are aware we are currently refreshing both schools’ websites and

prospectuses in me for the new academic year. Part of this process has been to look at refreshing the school logos for each school. We have discussed this with all children, staff and through the Parent Forums at each school, the ideas from which have supported our decisions. A natural step from revising our logo will be to look at updang our school uniforms. Whilst this is an excing development, we would like to reassure parents that no firm decisions have been made around uniform and that this is a process which will be phased in over me so that parents do not feel they need to buy new uniform unnecessarily. No formal changes to uniform will be brought in before at least September 2016. Parents should feel confident to encourage you to do so: there will be no change for this September.

Sports Day School Lunches th

During the week 13 July – 17th July the kitchen will be able to offer ‘free choice’ every day for Year 3, 4 and 5. If your child would like to accept this opportunity on one or more days they will need to bring in £2:10 each day for their meal.

Tri Golf Fes#val On Thursday 21st May children from Year 3 and 4 took part in a Tri Golf Fesval at Holy Trinity School. This was the first me a team from Hammond School have a2ended this event and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves learning lots of new skills and techniques. The team were: HaDe Rastle-Connolly, Eve Marshall, Lucy Howe, Liam Camden from Year 3 and Cameron Bond, Joe Cranham, James Doyle, Elliot Street, Lucy Parrant and Bonnie Griggs from Year 4. The team were placed 6th overall. Well done to all who took part.

On Friday 5th June the decision to hold our annual sports was eventually made and what a good decision it was! Despite the li2le shower the weather turned out to be good and a brilliant day was had by all the children and from the feedback the parents enjoyed themselves as well. Thank you all for coming and making the day such as success. The eventual winner this year were Green Team. A special well done to Green Team and to all the children who took part. May I also say a big thank you to all the parent and children helpers who ensured that the day ran smoothly.

Eco / School Council Update The School and Eco Councils have been focusing on how to improve the condion of the outside eang area. Recently we have been having meengs every Monday to try to fix this issue. We have decided that hall cleaners will be sent outside to ensure no cutlery or cups are le" out on the tables as it has become a habit of some to leave them outside. Also there has been a lot of rubbish le" on the tables or on the floor. We also expect the hall cleaners to pick up the li&er and put it in the bin. But it is not enrely the hall cleaners job, so could you please encourage your children not to drop or waste food, as this can ruin the outside area. We have also encouraged the children not to waste or drop food through our assembly we have presented. Stuart Sheffield - School Council Oliver Hockey - Eco Council

Astro Pi Compe##on In the week leading up to Easter the children had the opportunity to parcipate in a compung compeon. The compeon worked with UK Space and Raspberry Pi to celebrate the first

Brish astronaut going into space, it asked Primary School children to create an idea for a game or experiment that could be programmed on a specially designed Raspberry Pi called Astro Pi. The winning idea would then be sent to the Internaonal Space Staon (ISS) with Brish astronaut Tim Peake. 15 groups entered from our school and aKer a lot of waing we found out that we unfortunately didn’t win. Rather excingly though, 3 of the groups were commended by the judges for the creavity and detail in their ideas. The groups were Stars in the Sky (3HS), Techo Team (4LM) and Girl Gang (3HS) they received a cerficate and a goodie bag to say well done for their efforts. Stars in the Sky had the idea for the Astro Pi to take photos periodically of stars to see any changes, Girl Gang created an astronaut game that was extremely detailed and Techo Team gave very wide range of experiments that could have been very useful on the ISS. Well done to all the groups for their hard work.

Year 3 This term we have been doing Bird Quest that is a 7 chapter novel that you write. We were also going to the hall in groups to do learning about the Stone Age. Puzzle Company came in and gave us Maths Challenges to complete. They were all very hard and we think the hardest was the penguin challenge. Ma7e D’Amico

Year 4 This term we did a lot of Dragons Egg and Dragons Egg artwork. We have almost finished wring all the chapters. We now need to paint a dragon. Also we papier-mâchéd an egg and decorated them with paint. We are really looking forward to making clay dragons and wizards. Lucas Daniel Maddy Mayne

Year 5 What we enjoyed this term: We have enjoyed the Tudor Novel which is the book we write in Year 5 which is about a voyage for King Henry VIII. Another thing we have enjoyed is science because this term we were lucky enough to hatch chicks, plant pots and go to the school pond and see frogs and tadpoles. Art is one of our favourite subjects in Year 5 as we get to create out own flower sculpture out of modrock and wire, lots of stuff for our Tudor Novel like pop up Hampton Courts, chests, compass and roses. What we are looking forward to: We are looking forward to doing the Tudor Banquet and the Tudor Drama Workshop, where we dress up. We are also looking forward to our Chertsey Museum trip. Message from the Vicar

Exit at the End of the Day Several comments have been made regarding the crowding at the steps at the end of the school day. We have therefore decided that we will try to alleviate this situaon by allowing Year 5 and Year 6 who walk home alone to exit through the side gate near the caretaker bungalow. This will start on Monday 29th June.

One of the Literacy foci in Year 6 this term has been soliloquys. The children have studied the premature death of King Edward due to his jealous mother-in-law. They have also studied the soliloquy and speeches in MacBeth by Lady MacBeth. Following these studies they wrote their own soliloquy from different viewpoints. These are two examples of the work produced.
