The Radio Home of Dutchmen Hockey “CBS Sports Sporty 1240 AM” Matt Dubrey (play-by-play) Brian Unger (analysis)

The 15th-ranked Union College hockey team (6-3-2) travels to Pennsylvania State University (3-5-1) over Thanksgiving Weekend (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), taking on the Nittany Lions of the Big Ten Conference at the newly-opened Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa. Faceoff is 7:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Dutchmen were off last week for final exams. Rick Bennett’s squad has won five of six games after sweeping 10th-ranked Rensselaer, Nov. 15-16, in a home-and-home series to capture the Capital Skates Trophy. Union remained perfect against ranked teams (3-0) and moved into second place in the ECAC Hockey standings, just three points behind Quinnipiac. Balance scoring has been a key in the Dutchmen’s success this season as six players have two goals in a game: Michael Pontarelli (vs. Bowling Green, 10/12), Sam Coatta (at Dartmouth, 11/1), Daniel Ciampini (at Harvard, 11/2), Daniel Carr (vs. Colgate, 11/8), Nick Cruice (vs. Rensselaer, 11/15) and Shayne Gostisbehere (at Rensselaer, 11/16). The Garnet and White are the fifth-highest scoring team in the NCAA, averaging 3.82 goals per game. Daniel Carr leads the way with seven goals and four other players have at least four markers. Union pressures opponents by averaging 34.0 shots per game (10th-best in the nation) while holding teams to 20.8 shots on goal. The 13.2 shot differential is second-best in the land and has resulted in Union outshoting its opponents in 10 of 11 games this season. Union’s freshman class continues to contribute in all areas. Offensively, Michael Pontarelli started the year with seven points (4g,3a) in four games while Eli Lichtenwald has goals in back-to-back games and three total in just four games. Mike Vecchione owns six points (3g, 3a) and sports a team-best 57.0 faceoff percentage. Jeff Taylor, Matt Krug and Noah Henry have seen significant time on the blueline and lent defensive support to goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos, who appeared in five games when Colin Stevens went down to injury. The Hockey Dutchmen took a break from the ice to help serve Thanksgiving Dinner to approximately 100 residents at the Schenectady YMCA on Tuesday (Nov. 26). Earlier this season, the team picked up litter in neighborhoods next to campus as part of its Helping Hands community service project.
