Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections

PA R ENTS PAGE February 16-19, 2011 Ease and Security—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): Say: One thing you’ve done since the beginning of the year to bring joy in my life has been . . . This brings me joy because . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read 2 Timothy 3:10-15. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of these verses. Truth • God’s people will face persecution and tough times in their lives. Untruths • Christians are no longer persecuted for their faith. • Only fanatics need to worry about religious prejudice. • God doesn’t expect me to do anything that would place me in danger. 3. Explore Scripture: Point out that these verses are part of a letter from Paul to Timothy. Explain that while Paul suffered persecution, he was quick to acknowledge that God had provided for his needs in the middle of that persecution. Say: Paul wanted to prepare Timothy for the persecutions he would face and to remind him that he could trust God in tough times. He also wanted Timothy to focus on the faithful teachings of his mother and grandmother. (See 2 Tim. 1:4-5.) Point out that we can still trust God to help us when we face challenges to our faith. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this step. 5. Nail It Down: Ask: What’s wrong with driving through a red light? Explain that a red light is a warning about traffic and that obeying it can save our lives. Say: Think of this letter to Timothy as a red light from Paul to us. He is warning us about tough days ahead, letting us know that God will help us, and reminding us that He has already provided help through family, teachers, and the Bible. Let’s avoid running red lights—let’s be obedient and get prepared for the future. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead this prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: May God bless and make you wise as you get ready for tough times. Parent Tip: Children and teenagers tend to embrace the faith of parents who show them unfailing love in ways they can understand. When a vibrant heart connection is in place, unfailing love flows from parent to child. Parents who love their children without conditions are modeling Father God, who shows that same grace to His children.
