Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE May 11-14, 2011 Resolving Conflict Biblically—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: It makes me feel good that you think I will be successful. You think I might become a ____________, but I also might become a _____________ because I’m interested in . . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Matthew 5:21-24; Ephesians 4:1-3; 1 John 4:20 Truth • Family members who express their feelings in love and without accusing show wisdom in resolving conflict. Untruths • If people just keep their feelings to themselves, families can live in peace. • If someone in the family has done you wrong, you have every reason to attack. • If there is conflict at home, just try to stay away from the family as much as possible. 3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Stand up and ask a family member to stand in front of you. Say to that person: We are going to make a slow-motion movie. Watch me and do what comes naturally, but move in slow motion. In slow motion, act as if you are going to hit the family member in the nose. He or she likely will try to stop you in slow motion. After a few moments of action, end the movie. Say: If we attack a family member with our words, that person likely will defend himself, and nothing is accomplished. But if we state our feelings in love, without attacking, we can resolve conflicts peacefully. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Include this thought as you pray aloud: Jesus, I know I can’t be close to You while I have broken relationships with my family. Give each of us wisdom to follow Your plan for restoring closeness to each other and to You. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Do you know how to make coffee or tea? Find out which one your parents prefer and plan to surprise them with their favorite drink this week as a reminder of your love for them.
