Scrap Series Meeting #3: The ULTIMATE Scrap Quilt! General Quilting supplies:  Rotary cutter  Self-healing cutting mat – I recommend a mat at least 18”x24”. With this size, you can cut a whole folded width of fabric.  Rotary cutting rulers: a rectangle (6” x 12” or 6”x24”), a small square (6” or 6 ½’), and a larger square (10” or 12 ½”)  Sewing machine that you are familiar with, in good working order – don’t forget the accessories box for your machine, extra bobbins, and the foot pedal!! o A note about bobbins – for scrap quilts, I like to use up bobbins with odds and ends of thread from other projects. If you don’t have odds and ends, think about fill ing a bobbin or two with thread before class.  Extra sewing machine needles for piecing – I like Universals or Sharps in a size 80/12  Thread – cotton thread in a neutral color (gray, white, cream, black, etc.). A spool over 1000 yards will last you through this whole project.  Surge protector for your machine for use in the classroom. (This is just a smart thing to use with your sewing machine ANYWHERE you sew, but especially in a place where multiple machines are using the same circuit…)  Pins – this quilt requires a lot of pins to keep all those corners lined up, so bring more than you think you need! I like glass-head straight pins that are at least 1 3/8” long.  Scissors to cut threads  Seam ripper  Spray starch – I like Best Press, which is available at Running Stitch Fabrics  If you have a box of sewing supplies, bring this, just in case I’ve forgotten to include something…   LUNCH, and maybe a snack, too. (If you’re anything like me, snacking while sewing helps.) Fabric: This quilt has many layouts and looks great any way you do it!! But, it requires MANY scraps!!  If you are comfortable doing so, you can start cutting strips of fabric before class. (If you are not comfortable doing this, don’t worry – we will have time in class.) Please choose what width of square you would like in your blocks below:  If you want 3” squares in the blocks… Cut 3 ½” strips.  If you want 2” squares in the blocks… Cut 2 ½” strips.  If you want 1” squares in the blocks… Cut 1 ½” strips – PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! One inch finished squares look the coolest, I think, but they are supremely tedious and a bit time consuming... I recommend only doing this if you know up front that you’re in for a challenge. You will need scraps of all kinds. We will talk more in class, but I always like to include, in my scrap quilts, all of the following:  Yellows, especially cheddars  Reds in a couple of shades – light red/pink  A print with animals (I like to have them peeking out from the squares)  A REALLY dark fabric or two  A REALLY light fabric or two OPTIONAL!! If you want to try an alternate technique bring a ½ yard of a lightweight fusible fabric-backed interfacing. (Not a knit kind, but something that is more stable, but not too thick.)
