OLSG Home Learning Year: 1 Term: Summer 2 Topic: Hooray… Let’s go on Holiday & Plants and Animals Hand in date: 13th July 2015
Context: Over the next half term we will be continuing and completing the Holiday topic from last term and then beginning a Science based topic focusing on Plants and Animals. In plants and animals the children will learn about the life processes and requirements that plants and animals need to grown and be healthy.
EVERYDAY I NEED TO:
Read to an adult
Practice my phonics (including nonsense words)
Practice my spelling
Practice handwriting
Here are some extension activities that your children may want to complete in addition to the weekly tasks: Week 1 SumDog Lessons Log into SumDog and complete some of your lessons, aim for about 3 lessons.
Each week I need to complete these activities in order. Week 1 Space Travel Holiday Do you think we will be able to have a holiday in space one day? There are many international projects underway which are exploring the possibility of intergalactic holidays! Where would you travel to if you could holiday in space? Would you visit another planet? An asteroid? A moon? Decide on a outer-space destination, and then design your the space hotel that you would stay in. Which planet would it be on? Week 2 Space Travel—activities! Think about what activities would you be able to do. Choose one and make a poster to tell everyone what fun things you could get up to. For example, Rock pooling in a moon crater? Racing in moon-buggies? Make a moon-dust sculpture on the moon? Watching the spectacular light show around Saturn? Week 3 & 4 Make a Miniature Garden Get an old shoebox or container and explore outside. Talk about the plants and flowers in their different habitats. Which plants will help make your garden character most at home? For example, do you want to make a Fairy Garden? Perhaps with moss for grass and daisies for flowers? Or a Dinosaur Garden with ferns and rocks for the dinosaurs to live in? You could even make yourself a cardboard cut out character and secretly hide them amongst your plants.
How an adult can help me: Help me with my writing if I’m having trouble with my ideas or my spelling. Help me find suitable plants make sure that I wash my hands and am safe whilst plant collecting (be careful not to pick toxic or stinging plants).
Resources I will need: Access to a computer to complete your SumDog lessons, research for London tourism, a shoebox, some mini plants and glue to stick it down. Crayons and colours etc for decorating.
Week 2 Why is London a tourist destination? Think about what attracts people to the city of London. Make a leaflet or poster advertising the famous places or history of the places people may want to visit. Week 3 SumDog Lessons Log into SumDog and complete some more of your lessons! Week 4 Talk Time- Choose a book about starting a new school year e.g. First Day Jitters which we read at the beginning of the year. Or ‘My Teacher is a Monster’. Talk time homework doesn’t need lots of evidence in the homework books a comment from an adult to say you’ve discussed it is enough. Ask other family members to give their opinions and to use ‘because’ to explain. Ask your child their opinion and ask them to use ‘because’ to explain.
