Honoring All Who Served NOVEMBER 2015 — THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

GREEN: NEW LAW PROVIDES COLLEGE CREDIT FOR MILITARY SERVICE Veterans and active duty members of the military now have the opportunity to find a quicker path to earning their college degree. Public Act 44 of 2015 allows veterans and individuals serving in the military to apply their college-level military experience and education toward academic credit. The law requires Michigan’s public universities to inform applicants that their training may translate into credit and review the applicant’s Joint Services Transcript for

VIETNAM VETERANS HONORED More than nine million Americans served our country during the Vietnam War era. A long-overdue homecoming–Michigan Says Thanks–was held at the Michigan Capitol on October 8, 2015 to properly thank and honor the veterans of the Vietnam War and their families for their service and sacrifice. Volunteers from the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration provided veterans with special lapel pins.

GREEN BACKS BILLS TO PROTECT VETERANS WITH SERVICE DOGS

Michigan Senate Remembers

I recently supported legislation to protect Michigan military veterans who use service dogs to better manage the effects of post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries. The package of bills – now signed into law – would recognize in Michigan law the service dogs that so many veterans rely upon for care, exempt licensing fees for veterans’ service dogs and establish penalties for anyone who harasses or injures a service dog. The legislation would help educate people that these service dogs are not pets, but working service animals that help vets and others cope with serious, often invisible injuries, not just physical disabilities.

For the 21st straight year, a special Senate Memorial Day service honored the servicemen and women who gave their lives while fighting for our country. The ceremony was held on Thursday, May 21, 2015.

NEW LAWS PROTECT RIGHTS OF ACTIVE-DUTY MILITARY PARENTS Our servicemen and women shouldn’t have to worry about retaining their custody rights while serving our country. I supported legislation–now law–to ensure that active military parents

are not punished if they are unable to appear in court for a custody hearing while serving overseas. Public Acts 50-52 of 2015 mandate that unless the best interests of the child are being violated, the court shall not modify the current custody order if one of the parties has filed a motion of stay under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
