DID YOU Cougar Volleyball alumna Shari Tune ’07 led her Liberty (Mountain View) High School volleyball team to the Missouri Class 2 State Championship in the fall of 2014 The team finished the year with a record of 39-3-1, defeating Fatima High School in the state championship match. Even though this was the first state title for any team at Liberty (Mountain View), it was not the first for Coach Tune. In 2010 and 2011 she led the Eminence High School
Redwings to back-to-back Final Fours, ultimately winning the 2011 Missouri Class 1 State Championship. Coach Tune credits current Columbia College Head Coach Melinda Wrye-Washington for instilling the importance of individual fundamentals and team defensive schemes as well as guiding student-athletes to their potential. Shari currently lives in Mountain View with her husband Jason and their three children Alex, 7, Jordyn, 5 and Bentlee, 2.

On June 16th, Columbia College Athletic Director Bob Burchard officially announced the appointment of Daren Munns as head coach of the Cougar baseball team. At the introductory press conference Burchard quipped, “Normally at these events you take a picture with a jersey or at your baseball field, well…we don’t have a uniform and we don’t have a field to show you, but at least now I can proudly say we have a coach.” Munns comes to Columbia from fellow American Midwest Conference (AMC) institution, William Woods University. Munns served as the head coach of the Owls since 2005. In his 10 seasons with the Owls, he has put together a record of 333-183, averaging just over 33 wins per season, and has finished in the top three of the AMC standings each year. Munns led William Woods to five consecutive AMC tournament championship games and seven total during his tenure. The Owls made four National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championships appearances under his guidance and were equally as successful in the classroom, earning NAIA Scholar Team accolades in three consecutive years.
Prior to his time at William Woods, Munns enjoyed back-to-back record-setting seasons in his two years at Harris-Stowe State University, culminating with 34 wins in the spring of 2005. Harris-Stowe made a 23-game improvement from 2004 to 2005 under Coach Munns and also led the Hornets to the AMC Tournament for the first time in school history. His first recruiting class produced four First Team AMC AllConference players, one of whom was a First Team All-American. Before taking the helm at Harris-Stowe, Munns served as assistant coach at Central Methodist College (1999-2001) in The Heart of America Athletic Conference. While at CMU, he served as hitting, infield and third base coach. The 2000 team broke numerous offensive records, appeared in the conference championship game, and qualified for the NAIA Regional Tournament. Immediately before joining Central Methodist, Munns served as associate head coach at Drexel University (1991-1998), in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His primary duty at Drexel was as recruiting coordinator and pitching coach. During his tenure, Drexel had their strongest recruiting classes in school history, including three Freshmen All-Americans.
“Through the interview process it became clearly evident Darren is the right choice to lead the Cougar baseball team,” said Burchard. “He is a person of integrity, character, and experience. Darren is a positive and likeable person who will fit right in with the values and mission of our institution.” Munns will spend the entire 2015-16 academic year recruiting and preparing for the team’s arrival in fall of 2016. The Cougars will begin competition in the spring of 2017, which will be the first baseball team Columbia College has fielded since 1982. Munns, a native of Mexico, Missouri, received his undergraduate degree in physical education from Missouri Western State College (1991) in St. Joseph. He received his master’s degree in athletic/ activities administration from William Woods University in the fall of 2009. Munns and his wife Sarah, reside in Columbia and welcomed their first child, Mary Ellen Munns, in July.
Somewhat Random Q&A with Coach Munns Cake or Pie? As a professional eater, yes and yes. Warm chocolate chip cookies trump both.
If you had a superpower what would it be? Ability to fly, because it has been a long time since my feet could leave the ground.
Do you use emoji’s? What’s an emoji?
What number do you wear & why? 54, it was my high school basketball number.
Your former players would say you use this one word too much… “Good deal”. I know its two words, but it is the most common Munnsism.

The Columbia College Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 2003 to recognize those individuals who have made significant contributions to Columbia College Athletics. Since its inception, 51 individuals or groups have been honored for their achievements. On Friday, September 25, the Columbia College Athletic Hall of Fame will induct its 13th class into this prestigious club. Read more about this year’s class! 1999 MEN’S SOCCER TEAM The 1999 Columbia College men’s soccer team is one of the most accomplished teams in school history. With a roster full of experienced players, the team set the school record for number of wins in a season, posting a 20-5 record. The 20-win season eclipsed the previous record of 17 set during the 1998 campaign. The 1999 team was known for its physical defensive play and its athletic and skilled offensive style. The squad’s smothering defense held opponents scoreless in 14 games, while scoring 73 goals – an average of three goals per game. Leading the way for the Cougars was 2011 Hall of Fame inductee Coach Dan Hogan, who was named American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year while coaching four NAIA All-Americans. L’MONT & KATHI BETZ Contributers The Betz family has been attending and supporting Cougar Athletics for over 20 years. In 1994 they were first introduced to Columbia College Athletics and started

attending basketball games with their neighbors. Many of those neighbors, including the Betzs, were instrumental in the founding of the Cougar Club & Scholarship Fund, and in turn, serve on the Cougar Club Steering Committee. They have previously been honored with the Athletic Director’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cougar Athletics and also served as Honorary Coaches for the 2006 and 2007 NAIA National Volleyball Tournaments. Their support of the department and its mission is second to none. LUANA BRANCO FIELDS ’10, Volleyball During her four-year career at Columbia College, Luana Branco Fields was honored with several individual conference and national awards. She was named First Team All-American Midwest Conference (AMC) as well as AMC Setter of the Year each of her four seasons at Columbia College. In addition, Luana was AMC Freshman of the year in 2005 and AMC Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008. In her first season with the Cougars, the team advanced to the National Championship game, ultimately losing to California Baptist. Following the tournament Luana was named an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. During her final three seasons in the navy and silver, she was able to take home First Team All-American honors. She currently holds the career record in total blocks and number of sets played at Columbia College. She is second in career assists, seventh in kills and third in digs.
RACHEL OSWALD HURT ’10, Women’s Basketball As a transfer student, Rachel Oswald Hurt’s impact on the Columbia College women’s basketball program was felt immediately. In her first game as a Cougar, she scored 24 points and corralled 13 rebounds in a victory over Park University. She showed amazing consistency throughout her career, averaging 15 points per game and grabbing nearly nine rebounds per contest. Because of her steady play, she was able to garner many individual honors. She was named to the First Team All-Conference team three times; named AMC Newcomer of the Year in 2008 and named AMC Player of the Year in 2010. Rachel was listed as an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in each of her first two seasons and finally as a Third Team All-American following her senior campaign. Her teams made two NAIA National Tournament appearances during her career and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen during the 2008-09 season. She currently holds the career mark for rebounding (890), is third in career scoring (1,560) and third in career blocks (143).
“When I made the decision to attend Columbia College to play basketball, I had no idea I would enjoy going to school so much. I thought I was going to go to school to just “play basketball.” I didn’t realize I would benefit and receive such a quality education as an art student. My professors were like family, instead of teachers. They really cared about their students and supported them to be successful. This is why my family and I continue to donate to Columbia College. We know it helps other young athletes excel and receive a quality education.” ~Greg Logan ’06, men’s basketball

Of all the impressive numbers the Cougar Athletic Department registered during the 2014-15 season, there is one that truly stands out.
355
It is not the number of career wins achieved by a coach, or the number of rebounds a player recorded last year; it is the number of volunteer or service hours contributed to the Columbia, Missouri community since July, 2014. In the fall of 2014, marketing students Miranda Schuster, Aqua Corpening and Maria Imhoff (Corpening and Imhoff are Columbia College student-athletes) began a project which focused on the integration of Columbia College student-athletes into the Columbia community through service projects. While the department was already active in the “Champions of Character” initiative sponsored by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
(NAIA), the students felt it was necessary to promote the good that was being done as well as find new ways to be connected. In the spring semester members of the Cougar Athletic Department began to promote the newly branded “Cougars in the Community” movement. Branded t-shirts were used as a way to formalize the outreach efforts, hours of service were logged, and articles relating to service were posted on the Cougar Athletics webpage, www.columbiacougars.com. The athletic department placed volunteers at the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, Delmar Cobble School, the Central Missouri Humane Society and several other locations during the spring semester. The Cougar Volleyball team was an early champion of the “Cougars in the Community” movement as they produced over half of all the volunteer hours recorded by the entire department. Graduate Assistant Coach Aleah Hayes took a lead role in organizing the volleyball team’s service.
“Getting involved in service allowed our student-athletes the opportunity to give back to the community and work alongside the individuals who support our athletic programs and institution,” says Hayes. The Athletic Department is always interested in hearing about new ways to be more involved with the Columbia community. If you know of possible opportunities for Cougar student-athletes to get involved, please contact Drew Grzella at
[email protected] or call (573) 875-7419. “We all knew that our teams were active in their service of others. But it wasn’t until we started logging hours and promoting our “Cougars in the Community” efforts that we understood the impact we were having,” says Drew Grzella, assistant director of athletics. “I am very proud of our student-athletes and coaches for making community service such a vital part of the college experience.”
