ILLINOIS MEN’S TENNIS • WWW.FIGHTINGILLINI.COM • (BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS) gles and 3-0 in doubles en route to helping Illinois down No. 37 Kentucky, Penn State and then finally an upset of No. 14 Michigan on April 6. The honor is Gonzales' fourth of his career and Illinois' fourth honor of the season after Gonzales earned the last one on March 3. Sophomore Billy Heiser is the only other Fighting Illini netter to grab the distinction this season, earning his accolade for the week ending Jan. 13. THE NATION'S BEST FANS The No. 15 Illinois men's tennis team is still at the top in the nation in attendance in 2008, announced the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in their second attendance poll of the year. The Illini men still lead the nation in average attendance with 560 through nine home matches at the end of March, and rank third overall in total attendance with 3,925 fans filling the Atkins Tennis Center this season to root on the top-15 ranked Fighting Illini. Illinois leads No. 1-ranked Virginia (545) and Texas A&M (471), who are ranked second and third, respectively, in average attendance. In total attendance, UI is third overall, following Virginia (5,424) and Texas A&M (4,716), who both have the advantage of at least three more home matches added to their totals this last month. PAVING THE WAY FOR ILLINOIS ON THE COURT On the court, seniors No. 11-ranked Ryan Rowe (27-13) and No. 48-ranked Ruben Gonzales (16-9) head the Illini lineup in the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, interchangeably, in singles. Junior Marc Spicijaric (11-11) and sophomore Billy Heiser (24-13) share the duties at either Nos. 3 or 4 singles to make up the top of the lineup for the Illini. No. 11 Rowe and Heiser (24-6), who made a huge jump in the ITA polls this week from a previous ranking of No. 29, take care of the duties at No. 1 doubles, while the newly formed teams of Gonzales/Spicijaric and Davis and freshman Waylon Chin inhabit the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles slots, respectively. Gonzales and Spicijaric have posted a 5-2 mark overall and a have gone 4-2 in conference affairs. For Davis and Chin, they are 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. 2007 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP The Fighting Illini made it to the Big Ten Championship finals as the third seed last year only to lose to No. 1-seed Ohio State for the secon straight year. The Illini started the tournament by beating Purdue 4-1 to make it to the semifinals. Illinois then took down their next foe Michigan, 4-1, to advance to the finals. The Orange and Blue then battled against the Buckeyes until the end, but eventually fell 4-1 after dropping the doubles point with losses at Nos. 1 and 3, then tallying its only win at No. 1 singles when then Illini Kevin Anderson took care of Bryan Koniecko in straights. LAST TIME WHEN - BIG TEN TITLE 2005 was the last time the Illini raised a Big Ten Championship banner at the Atkins Tennis Center. The Illini went 25-4 during the season and 10-0 in conference play. The Big Ten Conference awarded the Illini with various awards, including Coach of the Year to Craig Tiley, Athlete of the Year to Ryler DeHeart and Freshman of the Year to Kevin Anderson. Anderson, DeHeart and GD Jones were unanimously voted All-Big Ten. On a national level, Anderson and DeHeart were named All-Americans. That same year, the Illini advanced to the Round of 16, losing to Florida State, 4-2. DeHeart became only the second unseeded player in the last 10 years of the 26-year history of the ITA National Indoor Championships to win the singles title. He was the first Illini to ever win the prestigious title. The junior also became the second Illini to ever reach No. 1 in the ITA rankings. HUNGRY SENIORS The last time that this Illini senior class has won the Big Ten Tournament crown was in 2005 when the seniors were freshmen. The Orange and Blue went 25-4, 10-0 in Big Ten play that year. The team ended first in the regular season and went 3-0 at the Atkins Tennis Center in the tournament to take home the team trophy. Since that spring, Illinois has waited to taste the win of the BIg Ten Championship two straight years, losing to Ohio State in the finals each year, losing 4-2 in 2006 and 4-1 in 2007. The Buckeyes also have captured the regular season title the past two year as well. HITTING THE 20-WIN PLATEAU Senior Ryan Rowe has shown his leadership on the court in a number of ways, but his most recent includes reaching the 20-win plateau (27-13) for the third straight season in his career and is the first Illini to reach the feat in 2008. Rowe is trailed by sophomore Billy Heiser, who joined the club with his singles win against Kentucky to record his first career 20-win season with a record of 24-13. In doubles, Rowe made it a double-double, as he and partner Heiser (24-6) registered their 20th win with a victory in the top slot against Kentucky as well - Rowe's third career 20-win season and Heiser's first. The mark has rocketed the pair to an 11th-place

Since Illinois stormed onto the tennis scene as one of the powerhouses of collegiate men's tennis in the early '90s, the Illini have reined atop the standings of the Big Ten Conference as well. When legendary head coach Craig Tiley officially took over the program in 1993, the Illini followed with a runner-up finish in 1996, their highest since 1984. Then came Illinois supremacy, as it won the league championship a record nine straight years from 1995-05, losing only three regular season contests and winning 83 straight regular season matches in the process. Tiley's Big Ten crown total is one short of matching the amount of titles Illinois garnered in a 60-plus year span when it won its first in 1914 and its 10th in 1946. Tiley accomplished his feat in only 12 years of coaching.
