The first in a series of twelve blocks. Piecing curved cuts of fabric is made easy with the Horizon Memory Craft 9400 QCP’s Professional Grade HP plate and foot duo. Create this easy breezy block and you’re on the way to creating an amazing sampler quilt. Janome Supplies Required: • Horizon Memory Craft 9400 QCP • Professional Grade HP Needle Plate and foot • Blue Tip needle Fabric and Notions: • Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids: colors Cobalt, Lagoon, Luna, Plum, Jewel and Lipstick

4. Thread needle and bobbin with cotton thread. 5. Unlock machine. Block Instructions: 1. Cut long strips: > Cobalt-3” x 14” > Lagoon-3” x 14” > Luna-4” x 14” 2. Place lagoon strip right side up, with luna strip right side up on top of it, overlapping both pieces by 1”. Use a rotary cutter to cut a freehand curve in the overlapped 1” area, being careful not to cut outside the overlapped area.
• Neutral color cotton thread Machine Set Up: Using the professional grade HP plate and HP foot will assure you of precise stitches and ease of sewing ¼” curved seams! 1. Lock machine.

Improv Curvy Block 3. Place luna strip right side down on top of the lagoon, right side up. Using the right hand edge of the presser foot as ¼” guide, ease the cut curved edges into each other and sew slowly with a ¼” seam allowance, adjusting the fabric as needed. Be careful not to stretch the fabric, but instead ease the edges into each other. Press seams to one side.
6. Set this piece aside. 7. Cut short strips: > Plum-5” x 9” > Jewel-5” x 9” > Lipstick-5” x 9” > Lagoon-2.5” x 9” 8. Place plum and jewel strips both right sides up, and overlap by 2”. 9. Use a rotary cutter to cut a freehand curve in the overlapped 2” area, being careful not to cut outside the overlapped area.
4. Overlap luna and cobalt strips in the same manner, overlapping the two fabrics by 1”. Cut a curve, repeating the step above with a rotary cutter, within the 1” overlap. 10. Place plum and jewel pieces right sides together and ease the cut curved edges into each other, sewing slowly with a ¼” seam allowance, adjusting the fabric as needed. Press seams to the darker fabric. 11. Repeat the step above with the jewel and lipstick pieces.
5. Sew together as in step 3. Press seams to the darker fabric. 12. Place the lipstick and lagoon pieces both right side up, and overlap them by 1”. 13. Use a rotary cutter to cut a freehand curve in the overlapped 1” area, being careful not to cut outside the overlapped area.

Improv Curvy Block 14. Place lipstick and lagoon pieces right sides together, easing the cut curved edges into each other, sewing slowly with a ¼” seam allowance, adjusting the fabric as needed. Press seams to the darker fabric. 15. Place this finished portion right side up with the longer edges going up and down, vertically. Square up the left side, trimming off just the uneven edges, if there are any.

16. Place lagoon/luna/cobalt piece right side up on your work surface. 17. Place the long edge of the plum/jewel/lipstick/ lagoon piece right side down even with long edge of lagoon/luna/cobalt piece. Sew together with a ¼” seam allowance. 18. Press seam to the lagoon/luna/cobalt side. 19. Square finished block to 12 ½”.
