HEAD COACH CLINT WALLMAN SCOUTS THE HOOSIERS... On the play of sophomore Elizabeth Tong

“ET had a great year. She won three times and she is really coming into her own in college golf. I am expecting a great event from her.”

On the play of senior Rosie Davies...

“Rosie is one of those electric players. I think she had five or six top-20 finishes this year. She is very solid and just on the cusp of breaking out. We are really excited about Rosie and her play this spring.”

On the play of senior Kate Coons...

“Kate, our senior captain, played exceptionally well down the stretch. She threw in some great rounds. Probably what I would call the highlight would be her 69 at Briar’s Creek in March. Probably one of the best rounds in college golf that we have had here in the last five to six years. It was amazing.”

On the play of freshman Marissa DeCola...

“Marissa really stepped up big at the Big Tens and posted two great numbers. Marissa is one of those dogged competitors who never gives up. She is learning what it takes to play at the highest level. I think you are going to see not only a great Central Regional but great play from her throughout the rest of her career.”

On the play of graduate student Kristen Schelling...

“Kristen has been rock-solid for us, especially when we need her. Her last round at Big Tens she threw in a critical 76 for us to move up the leaderboard. Kristen is one of those experienced competitors having played in the USGA Championships, 13 of them. I am looking for her to make some noise.”

On the importance of qualifying for the Regional...

“Anytime that you qualify for a postseason event, it is a big milestone for your program. As college golf evolves, getting to a regional and getting to the NCAA Championships is becoming increasingly difficult. The Big Ten qualified seven teams for this year’s postseason tournament out of a total of 72 teams selected. It is a big deal for us. We are really excited and the girls have worked very hard. There are obvious benefits, not just from the competition standpoint, but putting the program on the radar of recruits. I think it is a big deal for us and establishes what we hope to be the norm for future years coming up. It is good to have younger players like Marissa and Elizabeth going through that process and knowing exactly what it takes. Kudos to girls for their hard work and we are looking forward to a great event.”

On the Central Regional field...

“When you get to postseason it is a great accomplishment and each region is very talented. The Central Region, I think, is probably the strongest of the three regions. We’ve pulled teams from all over the U.S. It is a very stacked field. For us to advance we are going to have to play well. We are certainly capable of putting up low numbers. I am excited to see how we stack up compared to some of these other teams we really haven’t seen too much. With that being said, you have Duke headlining the field. Host Oklahoma had a great year. Washington was No. 1 at the end of the fall season. Arizona State is traditionally tough and UC Davis is always in the top 25. You go down the line and there are certainly favorites that can move on to the next state, but I also think this is a very deep region and anyone from Wisconsin at No. 20 all the way up to Duke can be in that final eight and advance.”

On the team’s excitement earning a Regional bid...

“When you are sitting there and watching the selection show we had a sense that we were probably in, but this group, with the exception of Kate and Pamela (Burneski) had not experienced that regional call or webcast. It was fun to watch them list off the names, and we went through the East Regional and we weren’t mentioned. And then we got to the central region and we were going down the list and our named popped up. There was huge jubilation. Everyone is really excited because it is a step in our journey we started in September in terms of trying to get ourselves into Georgia. That is our ultimate goal, getting to Georgia and competing for the national championship. And all those days of 6:30 a.m. workouts and practice in the rain is all worth it when you are sitting there and watching your name go up to compete in NCAA postseason. For the girls it means they accomplished what they set out to do at this stage. They are excited, they are working hard and they know they have a challenge in front of them. I think they are embracing the challenge, are looking forward to it and are ready to tee it up with the nation’s best.”
