Grove Green Ward The Population of Grove Green Ward Grove Green ward has increased in area. The extension of the south east boundary from Grove Green Road to the A12 in 2002 has increased the area of the ward from 83 to 90 hectares. The number of people living in Grove Green ward has risen from around 11,071 residents in the 1991 Census to 11,400 people in the Census of April 2001, a growth of 3%. (The 1991 count is an estimation of the previous population within the new 2002 ward boundaries). The population density of 127.25 people per hectare in the ward is the 2nd highest in the Borough, which averages 56.43 people per hectare. Grove Green ward has the 4th largest population in Waltham Forest, with 5,783 women and 5,617 men living in the ward.

Census 2001 Grove Green ward has far more young adults aged 16 to 29 years and fewer people over 60 years than the Borough age profile, as shown in the above graph. 19% of the population are children under 16 years, the 3rd lowest percentage in Waltham Forest. There are higher than average numbers in the age group 20 to 29 years. The 2,700 people in this age range are the highest number of young adults in the Borough. 13% of the ward residents are over 60 years, below the Borough average of 15.5%. 41 residents were aged 90 and over, and 83 aged between 85 to 89 yrs in 2001.

Grove Green Ward The Ethnic Groups in Grove Green Ward The ward population has changed in ethnic composition since 1991. The Census ethnic categories are not the same in 2001 as those used in 1991, so comparisons over the decade are not exact. The new category of “mixed ethnic groups” was introduced in the Census 2001. There are 5,879 people in the White population groups in Census 2001. These consist of 4,550 British, 309 Irish and 1,020 other European groups. This is the largest number of other Europeans in Waltham Forest. The White groups were 60% of the ward population in Census 1991, (using 2002 ward boundaries), and are now 52% in Census 2001. The following diagram compares the percentage in the ethnic groups in Grove Green ward, (the outer circle) with those of the Borough in 2001(the inner circle).

Census 2001 48% of the ward population is from the Black and Minority Ethnic Groups, having increased from 40% in Census 1991(for the 2002 ward boundary). The main groups present in 2001 are – 1,266 in the Black Caribbean group, 1,200 in the Pakistani group, 840 in the Black African group, 792 in the Indian group, there are 435 in the Mixed group.

Grove Green Ward Religions Present in Grove Green Ward This is the first time that a question on religion has been asked in the Census, so no comparison with previous years is possible. The response rate by the residents of the ward to this voluntary question was 92%. The majority of the population in the ward are Christian (49%). There are 2,335 Muslims, 20% of the population. There are 319 Hindus and 219 Sikhs. 16% of people in the ward said they had no religion. Household Composition in Grove Green Ward There are 4,822 households with residents in 2001 compared with 4,649 in 1991 (for the 2002 boundary), a growth of 4%. 36% of all households in the ward are one-person households, above the Borough average (33%). There are 523 one-person pensioner households in 2001, and 1,197 other adults living alone. the total number of “all pensioner” households in the ward (whether a person living alone, or in a couple or family) is 689. there are dependent children in 28% of all households in the ward, below the Borough average of 31%. There are 1,342 households with dependent children out of a ward total of 4,822 households. There are 393 lone parent households with dependent children. The majority of lone parents are female (361), and 32 are male.

Grove Green Ward Health and Disability in Grove Green Ward The Census 2001 asked about people’s general health over the previous 12 months. Grove Green ward has a lower proportion of people reporting that their health is “not good” than the Borough average. 951 people reported that they are in “not good” health (8.3%), below the borough average of 9%. 2,527 people have “fairly good” health (22%), the same as the Borough average. Limiting long-term illness (LLTI) covers any long-term illness, health problem or disability that limits daily activities or work. The proportion of the ward population reporting LLTI has grown over the decade since Census 1991. 28% of households in the ward contain at least one person with limiting long- term illness in 2001, below the Borough average (32%). 1,676 people reported LLTI in 2001, compared with 1,232 in 1991. the proportion of people of all ages reporting limiting long-term illness in the ward was 14.7% in the Census 2001. This is below the Borough average of 16.5% with limiting long-term illness. The proportion in 1991 was 11% for the ward. A new question in Census 2001 asked about the number of hours given in unpaid care to members of the family, neighbours and friends. 884 people in the ward give unpaid care to others, 8% of the population. The chart shows the number of carers in the ward and the average hours they give in unpaid care. 18% of unpaid carers give 50 hours or more care per week, below the Borough average of 22%.

Grove Green Ward Economic Activity and Industry of Employment There are 8,791 people of age 16 to 74 years in Grove Green ward. 68% are economically active, and 32% are economically inactive. The latter includes the retired (7.7%), students not working (8.5%), those looking after home and family (6.5%), and the permanently sick (4.1%). 58% of the residents were employed, full-time, part-time and selfemployed. The Borough average is 59%. 5.5% were unemployed in April 2001. The unemployment rate for April 2003 is 6.0%. The average number of hours worked per week is 40.04 hrs by men, and 35.01 hrs by women. This is close to the Borough average for men (40.48hrs), and above the Borough average for women (33.45hrs).

Census 2001 There are 2,882 men and 2,525 women in employment in Grove Green ward. The largest proportion of men and women work in business, real estate or renting industries, and the ward has the 2nd highest number of people working in those industries. In this ward are the highest number of women in the Borough working in health and social work (512 women). Many men and women work in wholesale / retail and car repair activities.

Grove Green Ward Travel to Work and Car and Van Use in Grove Green Ward Employed people in Grove Green ward were asked to name the means of travel that describes the longest part of their journey to work. the majority of commuters use the underground (44%). This is the 2nd highest percentage in the Borough (average 28%). 58% use public transport (underground, rail or bus) to get to work. 1,438 travel to work by car as a driver or passenger (27%). 6.4% work at or mainly from home, below the Borough average (6.9%).

Census 2001 Cars and Vans available to households in Grove Green ward 54% of all households in the ward have a car or van for private use in 2001. The Borough average is 61%. 539 households have 2 or more cars. 46% of households have no car or van. This is higher than the Borough average of 39%. Public transport is readily available. the estimated total number of cars and vans available in the ward was 3,261 in 2001.

Grove Green Ward Qualifications of Grove Green Ward residents 8,791 residents between the ages of 16 and 74 years were asked about their qualifications. 25% of residents have no qualifications, (Borough average 29%). 30% have GCSE’s or “O” levels or NVQ’s at level 1 or level 2. 10% have 2 or more “A” levels, 4 AS levels or NVQ level 3. 31% have a first degree, higher degree or Higher National Certificate or Diploma. The Borough average is 24%. 822 residents between the ages of 18 and 74 are full-time students. This is the largest number of students in the Borough. Housing Type, Tenure and Amenities in Grove Green Ward There are 4,822 households in the ward with an average household size of 2.36 persons. There were 155 vacant properties and 11 second homes in April 2001, a total of 4,988 household spaces in all. Housing Type

Census 2001 The largest proportion of housing by type is terraced housing (43%). There are 3,130 households in terraced housing. 27% of housing is flats in converted houses. This is the highest number of converted flats in Waltham Forest, with 1,342 households. There is a lower than average proportion of purpose built flats (18%). There are few semi-detached houses in Grove Green (7%).

Census 2001 Housing Tenure 57% of residents own their home, either owned outright or with a mortgage. There are 2,744 households. Grove Green ward has 8% Council rented housing (362 households), half the Borough average of 15.5%.. 5% are renting accommodation from a Housing Association (HA), or from a Registered Social Landlord (RSL). The Borough average is 8%. 28% are renting from a private landlord or letting agency, the highest percentage of private renting in the Borough (average 15%). There are 1,352 privately rented households. Housing Amenities 873 households are overcrowded (18%), above the Borough average of 16%. 729 households have no central heating (15%), above the Borough average of 12.3%. Waltham Forest has the highest % of housing lacking central heating out of all the London Boroughs. 76% of housing has the lowest floor at ground or basement level. Less than 1% of households have the lowest level at 5th floor or above. Census 2001 gives us detailed information on a community in the process of change.
