Virtue:
Scripture Verse:
Initiative
“But here is the one thing I do. I forget what is behind me. I push hard toward what is ahead of me.” Philippians 3:13 (NIrV)
Devotional Thought: In third grade, I was playing outfield, and I got a line drive to my shin. I fell down and was in tears. My dad even jumped over the fence and carried me off the field—it was super embarrassing! I could’ve given up; I could’ve thought about the pain; I could’ve thought that I would never be good enough. I could have done any of those things, but I didn’t. Instead, I practiced and became better; eventually, I went on to play sports in high school and even college. When you make a mistake, you need to move beyond it and push yourself to do better the next time. Elbert Hubbard said that “There is no failure except in no longer trying.” Making mistakes or losing a game is okay, but giving up is not okay. Taking Action: Look back at your baby pictures. Think about all the things that were hard or that you could not do. What if you had given up? What if you were still eating baby food from a jar? Think of all the great food you would not be able to eat. Don’t give up on something that is hard now, because you will not be able to do something awesome later.
