No watches, earrings, bracelets, sunglasses, boots, black soled shoes, or hard-billed hats b. The game is played between 2 teams of 6 players 1) Each team must have a minimum of 5 players to start a game 2) Teams may continue to play with less than 5 players if the refs think they might win c. Captains should be designated to act as the main spokesperson with referees d. Game balls will be provided by Intramural Sports 1) If you wish to warm-up before a game, practice volleyballs are available through the SRWC 2) Game balls will be used by all teams to ensure that volleyballs are properly inflated and the proper size e. If an ineligible player is discovered during a game, that game will be forfeited (unless administrative issue)
SCORING & TIME a. Rally scoring – Both serving and receiving teams are capable of scoring b. Serving teams that score, retain their serve c. Receiving teams that score, gain the serve d. An ugly return is not always an illegal return Each team has 3 chances or contacts to return the ball over the net If both teams hit the ball simultaneously, each team still has 3 chances or contacts If two or more teammates hit the ball at the same time, it is considered 1 contact Lifts – open palm bump, setting at chest level, setting for 1 or more seconds 1) Must pop the ball. May not carry the ball or control the ball Blocks do not count as contacts 1) Unless the blocker tries to play the ball after or during a block Receiving teams may not return a serve in their own attacking zone if the ball is above the net (No spiking serves) Opposing teams may not play the ball over their opponent’s net 1) Exception – if the ball is breaking the vertical plane of the net Multiple blocking contacts are considered 1 contact and not a double hit Doubles – Successive contacts with various parts of the body 1) Double hits are illegal unless it’s during the team’s 1st contact after a serve or when blocking/attacking at the net
Violation Reminders 1. Centerline – one’s whole foot, hand, or body must cross unless an unfair advantage was created. a. Over the line is not a fault after the ball is out of play 2. Net – creating an advantage over an opponent a. Touching the white tape of the net while attacking/blocking b. Touching top 2.5 feet of antenna c. Taking support from net while playing ball d. Or hindering an opponent 3. Illegal Rotations – Players may not overlap each other during serve. a. middle row players may try to hide corner players 4. Illegal Contacts a. 4 Hits b. Lifts & Throws c. Double Hits
ATTACKS AND BLOCKS 1. Front Row a. Players may block or attack from anywhere on the court b. Players may put hands and arms on the other side of the net as long as it does not interfere with: i. Sets on opponents’ sides 2. Back Row a. May not attack or block the ball in front of the 10 foot line b. May attack and block if back row players jump from behind 10 foot line c. If no part of the body is above the net when contacted, it is considered the teams’ 1st contact

The libero is a defensive specialist Liberos must wear a different color jersey than the rest of his or her team Liberos must stay in the back row When it’s a liberos turn to rotate into the front row, they must sub out a. Liberos must wait 1 rotation before subbing back in 5. Only 1 player may be designated a libero per game a. A new libero can be named if the original becomes sick or injured. 6. Libero Attacking Setters a. Liberos may not set a ball to an attacker in front of the 10 ft line a. he body is above the net when contacted in the attacking court, it is counted as the teams 1st contact
SUBSTITUTIONS – Champ only Players may sub at any time (Liberos may sub in for any back row player at anytime*) 1. Whoever the player subs for is the player they must sub with for the rest of the match 2. Once a player subs out, they must sit out 1 rotation
