Is Orange Really the New Black? Social Science and Juvenile Justice
Join us for a night of fun and relaxed science conversation with a local scientist! Here’s this month’s topic: It has been said that a society can be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members. But what if those individuals are both perpetrators in justice and victims in their own right? Justice-involved youth represent one of the most vulnerable among us with up to 90% having experienced some form of lifetime traumatic event and up to 70% having a diagnosed mental health disorder. So how does society achieve justice while also maintaining its humanity for the individual? Can juveniles who have been convicted of serious crimes during adolescence truly be “rehabilitated” or are they simply adult criminals in the making? To help with these tough questions, we’ll turn to social science and the science of brain development for answers at the August Science Café!
