GSC Women’s Basketball Weekly Release
AROUND THE GSC It took just four conference games for there to be no more unbeaten teams, as North Alabama and Lee both dropped their first games of the season on New Year’s Eve. UNA was on the road at rival Valdosta State, and, after being tied at halftime, could not withstand the offensive outburst of the Lady Blazers and Sonya Franklin. Franklin had a career-high 28 points in the VSU victory. West Georgia overcame a tough first quarter to hand Lee its first loss of the season. UWG scored just seven points in the first 10 minutes and trailed by a point entering the final frame, but the Wolves were able to bounce back and earn the 49-47 win. Aysha Harris scored the gamewinning basket with just 3.1 seconds left in the game. Lee, West Florida, Valdosta State, and West Georgia enter this week atop the league standings with 4-1 conference records. UWF is the lone GSC team receiving votes in the WBCA Coaches’ Poll. The Argonauts’ Toni Brewer leads the country in rebounds at 13.2 boards per game and is fifth in the GSC with 15.5 points per game.
