Task Description:
The General Labourer – Steel working outside the ship operates primarily as a slingman. When unloading steel, the labourer is responsible for approaching the head and unhooking the slings from the pennants. There are typically two pennants on each side of the load. Once the slings are unhooked from the pennant, the labourer may reach for the slings or use a canary to pull the slings to the edge of the load. If the slings are free, the labourer removes them and carries them to a pile on the dock away from the offload area. If the slings are not free, the labourers wait for the lift truck driver to lift and separate the load. Secondary tasks include changing pennants when the length or type of steel changes, and cleaning up metal and sling waste.
