Travel in your mind to the horizon…where the earth meets the sky….where the familiar morphs into the universe… where discovery abides and possibilities are limitless. Powered by the sun, the Australian horizon inspired me to create a mood in a glance with light lines and shadow, vibrant color and dusty dream shades. The outback is a unique world where the key element is contrast. Share this world filled with surprise…birds that don’t fly, trees filled with water! The wild land is dotted with structures that draw life from the earth. Fencing checkers the landscape aiming to keep some things in and some things out! Horizons, a collection that will take you on an imaginary trip you can enjoy in the comfort of your own sewing station! It is dynamic, diverse and useful in hue, scale and dimension.

Gentle shades of muted greens, misty greys and hazy purples blend into soft whispers, suggesting the time of day when light fades allowing only a hint of colour.
A blend of intensely hot yellows and violets held down with shades of brown and grey, to reflect the changing moods of the Australian landscape.
In the heat of the day the sun warms the earth bringing out the intensity of true color outlined in charcoal shadows. We love colour and aren’t afraid to use it!

Kathy Doughty is a self-taught quilter, teacher, author, fabric designer and owner of Material Obsession- a patchwork shop in Sydney, Australia known for innovation in contemporary fabrics and designs. Working with customers, teachers, and industry leaders has provided a unique skill base and an eclectic style, which is reflected in Kathy’s fabric designs. Kathy’s ranges bring her imagination to life, translating her drawings into designs with a focus on versatile functionality. Medallions, borders, sashing, backgrounds and fussy cutting elements are all considered. The color palettes bridge traditional and more contemporary fabrics. Kathy believes that creative expression is about interpreting what we see into something new. Her life in Australia is a blend of captured images; birds, leaves and structures found on never ending horizons. Although she now calls Australia home, Kathy is always available for workshops on her frequent trips to the USA.
